Do women need to go all out with weights?

If I am a woman and I train in the gym, should I tryto lift heavy weights, like as much as I can, or I will better lift alittle more times? Do I need to make that big effort of lifting much? Not looking into getting muscular and big – just want to be fit.

Most women can't get obviously muscular. It's just not in their genetics. But equally they don't need to lift heavy per se. Heck I don't - I just like to. On the other hand don't use that as an excuse to use 2lb dumbbells on all the exercises.

You will be fine by going all out, because in any case women are genetically predetermined to lift lighter, so you won't lift heavy enough as to get lots of musculature. You will, however, burn more calories, which should help you with staying in nice and lean shape.

The next time you are at the gym, look at who's on the cardio equipment. Mostly overweight with unimpressive physiques.

Look at who's in the weight room - women with great physiques doing things like walking lunges, squats, glute kick backs.

Weight training should always be your first priority. Hard weight training is what sculpts the physique and builds the metabolism. Cardio simply burns calories and too much cardio will give you that unattractive skinny fat look.

The three pillars of fitness are strength, endurance and flexibility. You should do cardio, weight train and stretch to cover all 3.

Your body has type 1, type 2a and type 2b muscle fibres. In order to effectively train all of them, you want to train through a variety of different rep ranges.

What you want to do is mix it up. Some days do high reps with lower weights and then do lower reps with higher weights. It is good to hit muscles from all different ranges. Weight lifting is a great way to burn fat and shape your muscles as a woman.
