Alot of people have been asking so I thought I'd post on what I know about DIY mesotherapy. Mesotherapy is a new treatment in the US (been in use for over 50 yrs in Brazil and Europe) that can remove the fat stored in cells, eliminate cellulite as well as tighten skin, remove stretch marks and treat baldness. I have about 9 months experience doing mesotherapy on myself to treat fat and cellulite. It does work, it's a bit slow (start to see results after 3-4 weeks on average, need 10 sessions/weeks on average depending on the amount of fat to be removed). The most important thing for this to work is DIET! Your tossing your money down the drain if your still eating like crap and not exercising. All meso will do for you is remove the fat from the cells, the cells will still be there ready to get refilled if your overeating.
For those of you that have had liposuction, and experienced the shifting of fat to new areas mesotherapy is a godsend and commonly used for this.
Okay, now to the meat of the matter. Your going to need some supplies:
Alcohol and cotton balls
Insulin syringes OR a 3 cc IM syringe with a leur lock needle tip. You can remove the huge IM needle and put on a leur lock 28 gauge or 30 gauge needle tip. This is a bit cheaper than buying insulin syringes but if your new to subcutaneous injections start with the insulin syringes. It's easier til you get the hang of it.
Benadryl from the drug store (optional--it's for the redness/swelling that will occur from the injections).
Emla cream if you want to numb your skin before doing the injections (you will be doing 50-60 injections. Fat tissue has few pain receptors but this can still hurt a bit if you hit a capillary or vessel--I spend the extra $ for the Emla cream--lower abs, inner thighs, hamstrings, butt tend to be more sensative than other areas so the cream is well worth it).
Saran Wrap if your going to use the Emla cream.
Mesotherapy solutions (I'll talk about this depending on your condition).
Some sort of sterile container to mix the meso drugs in (I use a sterile urine specimen cup can be purchased at medical supply websites).
HOW TO DO A SUBQ INJECTION:
First, clean the area your going to inject with alcohol on a cotton ball and let it dry a few seconds. What you want to do is pinch up your fat, take the insulin syringe and inject into the fat. It's pretty easy. For better description and photos do a search on how to do an insulin injection. Diabetics do them daily so there's tons of websites out there with "how to" info.
TO TREAT CELLULITE
Cellulite is a tricky bugger. You must "grade" the type of cellulite you have in order to know what cocktail of meso products to use. There are 3 grades:
Grade 1: cellulite only present when you pinch the skin
Grade 2: cellulite only present when your standing, it disappears when you lay down
Grade 3: cellulite present when standing and laying
There are a million different things you can inject to treat cellulite. Now that you know what grade your cellulite is go to Prollenium.com and download their cocktail suggestions which are free, pdf files. Great resource. They also have a description of some of the drugs used in meso. If you get the Emla cream you don't need to buy the Lidocaine. Personally I got "high" off of injecting the lidocaine and it makes some people sick. I never use it, it's a bit dangerous in my opinion as it's a pretty hardcore drug whereas most of the mesotherapy products are herbal drugs and naturally occuring drugs in your body.
TO REMOVE FAT THAT IS NOT PLAGUED WITH CELLULITE:
The best, cheapest and most simple solution to use is Lipostabil or phosphatidyl choline, triac and caffiene. Go to prollenium.com and download their pdf files to get cocktail suggestions as well as descriptions of the actions of the various meds.
OKAY LETS INJECT!
So your ready now with all your stuff. First you want to take the benadryl tablets to help with the redness and swelling that should occur after you inject. Next, you will want to select the area your going to treat and apply the Emla cream to it. Emla cream will need to be applied about 1 hour before you inject but not longer than 2 hours. You do not need to use the whole tube!! In fact one tube should last you 10 sessions depending on the area your treating. Emla cream is a perscription drug, people can get very sick and overdose on it. But don't be stupid about using it, a little will go a long way. People only get problems when they slather it on so thick and keep it on for longer than 2hrs. There is a trick to using it. Apply a THIN layer to the area to be treated and DO NOT rub it into the skin. Have your sheets of saran wrap ready and as soon as you apply a little emla put the saran wrap over it. The saran wrap keeps it from getting absorbed deep into your dermis where you will not be injecting. You only want to numb the outer layer of skin, that's what the saran wrap enables the emla to do. So you leave this on for no more than 2 hrs. Really 1 hr should do just fine.
Prepare your mesotherapy injections: when you order meso products they are normally sold in packs of 10. You should keep them in the fridge to keep them "fresh" so will want to take them out while your sitting around in your saran wrap so that they can warm to room temp. They come in ampules. The correct way to open an ampule is to grap the neck with a cotton ball and snap the neck away from you. Check the solution in the vial for bits of glass. It's very rare for glass to get into the solution but why take the chance and not check? You don't want to be injecting glass into your body. So then you dump the fluid in the ampule into your sterile container. Do the same for all the amps your going to use. You may have to tap the amps against the side of the container to get it to come out as they are vaccum pressurized.
So you now have all your solution in the sterile container. You should have about 8 to 10 cc's worth of solution. Take your insulin syringes and start drawing it up. Draw up about 45 units into the insulin syringe which will be enough for you to inject 3 times using the same syringe. Therefore your going to probably have around 20 or so syringes filled. Each to inject 3 times--after 3 injections the needle gets dull which means more pain for you. Before you inject remove the saran wrap and wipe the emla cream off with the alcohol and cotton balls.
Injections should be about half to one inch apart. Try to be systematic about it for best results, like performing the injections in lines across the area to be treated.
The first time you do it you will want to take some precaution and only inject yourself with one syringe worth. Then wait 10 minutes or so to see how you feel. If you feel sick, nauseated or otherwise not happy then your probably allergic to something in the mixture. Don't do any more. If nothing happens then continue. It is normal and a good sign that your products are potent if you get a red, inflamed area. This will go away in a few hours or rarely days for some. If a day after the injections you notice a lumpy feeling where you injected all it means is you injected too much, next time inject less into that area. The lump will dissapate in a week or so, not to worry.
GENERAL GUIDELINES TO STAY OUT OF TROUBLE:
Do not do more than 2 areas per week. Actually one area is preferred. IF you do 2 areas space them as many days apart as you can. Mesotherapy puts a huge demand on your lymphatic system so don't overkill it. When I say an "area" I mean like your love handles is one area, your entire abs is one area, your butt and thighs is one area, both triceps are one area.
You will probably bleed a little during the injections, it's normal just means you hit a capillary or little vessel, don't freak out unless you start to feel bad.
SIDE EFFECTS:
Slight bleeding at injection site, redness, inflamation, you may itch, you will probably bruise some.
Don't take this lightly and please do as much research on it as you can. It's been done overseas for many years with no deaths. However, you must not have any current medical conditions. Read the contraindications section from the prollenium medical downloads. It's your responsibility to learn how the drug your injecting may react with drugs your currently taking. Take the time to do so. Doctor's recommend not doing any exercise 48hrs after you do mesotherapy and to eat a high protein meal/s while doing it. As for the exercise part, personally I do the meso on the day before my noncardio day. I still weight train the day after but rest a bit longer so as to keep the heart rate lower. Seems to work for me.
BE PATIENT: It will take on average of 4 sessions before you start to see results. Some people end up needing 15 or so sessions before they are happy. It all depends on your diet and how much fat your trying to loose.
A good sign it's working is that you'll start to poop soft, green, smelly stools and may have to pee more than usual. Don't be surprised if your on the can 6 or so times a day.
COST
It will run you about $200-$250 for all the above supplies, syringes, emla, and meso drugs to treat one area. IF you go to a Dr. it will run you about $3k! No kidding!
