Whats the deal with dextrose? I hear many people say they take it pre-workout...whats it do? Energy?

PRE workout? I take it post to replenish the glycogen stores from an intense workout. I suppose if you took it pre-workout it could give you energy, but, I doubt it would last very long.

dextrose = glucose is a high GI carb you take postworkout for its insulin spike

So are you guys saying that there is no need to take it preworkout to give you added energy stores to fuel you through and intense workout? Sometimes on Leg day I would drink a Ultrafuel carboforce to help me sustain energy throughout my workout, then drink another postworkout to replenish lost glycogen. I find that I can train with much more intensity that way?

Different things work for different people. Whatever you need to do to train harder, keep doing it. I was just saying that if you were to drink something with dextrose in it preworkout, that energy would probably go away quickly. If you're drinking something slowly throughout your workout, it'll probably be ok.

well it depends on what time of the day you lift. I lift at 6 so my first meal needs to be a fast absorbing protein with dextros or maltodextrin so i can fill my muscles up after a long night and get ready for a workout. This is a good situation for using dextros pre workout.

I drink ultrafuel as i work out too, seems to work best for me rather than having all my carbs pre workout which wear off fast. U

I lose energy and strength real fast if I don’t have ultrafuel during my workout. When i started using ultrafuel while working out all my lifts went up!. Too bad they are going to stop making it.

Dextrose works good along with creatine about 20 minutes before a workout. This is because it can cause an insulin spike. What works even better is a combo of dextrose and maltodextrin. Since dextrose is used up fairly quickly, malto will slow it down.

I've found that taking 20 g of hydro whey, 5g BCAA's and 5g Glutamine with 40g dextrose during my workout is great for energy and recovery. I have a similar drink post workout and a meal an hour after my post workout shake.

I have oats mixed with some whey, about 1 hour before going to the gym. Its something that is easy to digest, and won't bother me during my workout. I don't like working out hungry, but working out on a full stomach is just as bad. Dextrose might be absorbed too quickly, but it'll probably be good if you take it right before, or during your workout. And like Java said, mix it with some whey.

I take dextrose with creatine with my while I'm lifting. It gives me some energy, helps replenish glycogen levels, and acts as a good transport for the creatine, then I hit the fast absorbing protein and maltodextrin with some glutamine post-workout.
