dealing with pregnancy cravings

emmab

New member
I am not having cravings per se, but strange likes and dislikes. I cannot face veges (usually a vegeholic!!!) and only feel like carb foods ie toast, cereal, soup none of which I usually touch. Any tips on how to cope with this, as I really want to get into a 10/50/40 type intake (C/P/F) as advised on this board. Or is this not a good ratio for pregnancy?

Cravings.....

Hiya,

I maybe totally wrong and naieve here my friend, but ask your Doc. if you can take Chromium Picolinate to reg. your Blood Sugar and calm the cravings down.

Just a suggestion, although, as I said I don't know if you can take it while preggy.

S.;)

I don't think that limiting your diet to 10% carbs while you're pregnant is a good plan.

After all, it was suggested to you by some guy on the Diet board who didn't know you are expecting a baby!

If your body is craving something, I think it's a good idea to listen to it, and go with what it seems to want. YOu don't need to pig out on doughnuts, but certainly oatmeal is good for you. Soup is good food, like the ad would say.

When you're pregnant, you want a well balanced diet--your body and the developing baby need everything.
Have you spoken with your Dr. or Mid-wife about this?

Ya gotta eat while you're preggo....give into the cravings, within reason....eat eat and eat if you feel you want to.....actually, I'm concerned about you, emmab, and your pregnancy....asking bout stomach exercises and now only 10% carbs while preggo???
I dunno.....

Girl you are pregnant!! Do not worry about ratios of any kind..you need to eat a healthy well balanced diet. Nutrition is very important when you are pregnant!! You need carbs!! You dont have to eat all the junk....eat wholesome good for you foods, tons of veggies, meats, oatmeal, fruits etc etc. You can give into those cravings once in a while...you should not be starving yourself of carbs anyway or even limiting them right now. You are not dieting for a show or to get shredded you are having a baby....talk to your doctor about diet tips and make sure you are taking prenatal vitamins! I ate like crazy wen I was pregnant and just walked and did little exercises along the way. Everything you put into your mouth is going to your baby as well......dont skimp out on foods now!

I don't get much of a chance to visit the boards these days...but I COULD NOT LET THIS POST GO!

HELLLLLOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! YOU ARE PREGNANT!!! Eating a clean well balanced diet is not the same as dieting for a show!!!! Why on earth are you so concerned with ratios and such? What you should be concerned with is eating all of the good clean food that your little heart...and that baby's heart desires!

Did you read my reply to your post about ab excersizes in pregnancy?......I am not getting on your case, OK maybe a little....but this is REALLY IMPORTANT! 40 weeks gestation is but a blip on the screen when you compare it to THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!

Believe me, I understand that you want to try to maintain some sort of "healthy shape" while pregnant....but guess what? YOU WILL GAIN WEIGHT! YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO! Does that mean it has to be 50 pounds? NO! But even if you did, NOT THAT I AM RECOMMENDING THIS, AT ALL ......SO WHAT?! Will it be the end of the world? Will it be physically devastating to either you or the baby? NO!!!!! What WILL be devastating is if you deprive yourself and the baby of vital nutrition during this VERY CRITICAL TIME FOR BOTH OF YOU!

Talk to your doctor/midwife and get some sound advice. It is one thing to keep yourself from eating to oblivion during this time in your life (and if you do, oh well)......but quite another to "diet" - DON'T DO IT - EAT WELL AND BE HAPPY.....enjoy this short period of time in your life. It will be over before you know it.

Please rethink your current approach to all of this.

Are you freaking out because you are gaining alot of weight? I gained 80 pounds with each of my kids and I really didn't eat everything in sight, it was as if my metabolism just shut down. I had two very healthy babies and the weight came back off fairly quickly as I breastfed both of them. There is nothing that will literally suck the fat off of you like breastfeeding. I also think that if you are craving something while pregnant then the baby is needing whatever you are craving as long as it isn't junk food. Please don't diet or train hard during this time as it really can hurt you and your baby.

I gained about 60 pounds with each of my kids--both were over 9 pounds. I nursed (and not until they were school-age, either) and the weight came off. Admittedly I ate like a horse, enjoyed every bite of it, and they were wonderfully healthy, high-Apgar little bundles. You don't have to pig out like I did, but as bikinimom said, it's a tiny part of your life, enjoy it, indulge yourself, and relax.

I gained 50 lbs with my daughter, and I ended up at a lighter weight after I had her and finished nursing a year. Pre-preg, I was 115 lbs; post-preg, I was 108. (The breastfeeding helped to burn off some of those permanent estrogenic fat stores in the hip and thigh area.)

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE remember that you are carrying another life inside of you. This is an important time for the development of that life, so be as healthy as you can in your decisions about food and lifestyle. The weight will come off, trust me. I too freaked out when I gained the weight, but I don't regret it and would do it again if it means that my child will be healthy.

dont go nuts at me

To those concerned that I am dieting, I AM NOT!!!!!! I just wanted to get some input on how to keep a balanced healthy diet while pregnant. I already have two healthy girls, so I'm not an idiot!!! I am not trying to lose weight or control calories, so don't freak out and fear that I am a weight-phobic irresponsible mum-to-be. And as for my q re ab exercises, I had heard from good sources that isometric holds are fine to keep muscle tone, so wondered if you guys agreed. Thanks for the info but DON'T WORRY SO MUCH ABOUT ME...BTW I am a psychologist, so am pretty onto it re going nuts or stressiing!!!

Whoa! Frankly I wouldn't have offered any advice, EXCEPT you were posting about cutting your carbs to 10% of your total intake, based on some pretty lack-luster advice from someone on the Diet board. Not what anyone would consider a balanced healthy diet for a pregnant woman.

Maybe if your posts were a tich more detailed, you wouldn't get such strong responses.

If you've been through this twice before, what do you want to do differently?

Pesonally, I think the outpouring of concern from absolutly total strangers is a pretty great thing.

Umm, psychologists are the nuttiest ppl going!!! :D
;) :p

I don't think generalisations are that accurate...a lot of people say bodybuilders are vain self-absorbed empty-heads!!! So I will let your comment slide.

This pregnancy is different because it is the first one where I have been free of eating disorders...did you all get that...FREE!!!!! Yes I am 100% cured with no hang-ups, so don't start thinking "oh, she is still not quite right" cos I definitely am. I knew the 10% carbs was a bit drastic, which is why I posted it for confirmation from some other people.

Concern is great and I really appreciate it, but I was starting to feel like you guys thought I was a complete idiot who would risk their baby's health for their figure..no effing way!!!

oh yeah ....

I forgot to add that my concern was because I was aware I am eating mostly carbs, and wanted to keep up a good protein intake for Bubs growth, as well as decent fat intake,. and have been struggling to eat foods that fall into those categories

Don't be so uptight, I was only joking. Here's an icecube:cold:
As for your pregnancy, I never judged you, it's just my immediate reaction, being a mother of 3, was that you weren't lacking in common sense and that you were healthy.

Nobody was jumping all over and I am sorry that you felt judged. I only know what I read and from what I read your situation seemed to be one that I (only speaking for myself) would be concerned about.

I am glad that you are over the eating disorder (some of all carry it with us FOREVER.....not that we are still engaging in the behaviour, but the thought does creep into our heads from time to time).

I have had a few rugrats myself and I understand the desire to try not to let things "get out of control" so to speak.....I always called it "damage control" hehehehe.

Please put your back down and retract your claws, I for one (as I AM 100% SURE ABOUT ALL OF THOSE WHO POSTED BEFORE ME) am not here to judge, make fun of, or trash somebody who is seeking help and/of info.....and beleive me when I say - I KNOW HOW IT FEELS TO HAVE PEOPLE JUMP DOWN YOUR THROAT!....as I have had to put the boxing gloves on (here and in other forums) on more than one occasion...but that's fine by me - that which does not destroy me only makes me stronger!

So whaddaya say?.....can we be friends and play nice?:p

Calm down hon. Some of us are just joking with you. The way your original post read it caused us some concern. Your hormones are raging right now - my poor DH got his ass chewed every day of my first trimester so I know you don't have much of a sense of humor right now. Just know that we want the best for you and your baby.

:) emmab:) Cravings are tough! I ate ranch dressing on everything. The no veggie thing is tough cuz you know your little one needs that stuff. Make sure you take your prenatals and maybe check out juice plus. I haven't tried juiceplus personally, but it's the talk of the mom to be exercise classes. Have fun and give in...it's the only time you can leave baskin robbins at 9am weighing 50 pounds over your normal weight and everyone smiles! I gained 50, lost it all in 10weeks, then lost another 15. (I had an 11 pounder via c-section) I plan on competing in 2 shows in july and I am just so happy that I've got my body (somewhat) i want to show the world! I never did the ratio thing a ma jig in pregnancy. There are great message boards on about.com for pregnancy, I lived there the whole 9 (10) months. Good luck and enjoy your soup and crackers!
Also, if you have a La Madeline near you, the tomato cream soup was like a drug to me my first trimester!

my sense of humour is still very much intact, and I assure you my reaction wasn't hormonally driven. It would be easier if jokes were obviously indicated as such, but I am still learning this system

Umm, I put a :D ;) :p after my post, which means joke, not serious, no harm meant, etc etc...next time I'll post a peace flag :) (smiley face)

Here is a book you may wish to check into:

Title: "What to Eat When You're Expecting"

Published By: Workman

Authors: Arlene Eisenberg, Heidi E. Murkoff and Sandee Hathaway, Morris Green M.D., F.A.A.P.

It was a fantastic book with ALL sorts of recipes, diets, tips, etc. **HAD A SECTION FOR CRAVING CONTROL IDEAS AND RECIPES for those days when you wanted to eat carbs all day.

God, I recall the days when I tried to trick myself into thinking that a Snicker's Flurry from DQ was ok since it was ice-cream and had milk in it..YIKES!

thanks vixenbabe...I have 3 of those authors other books (what to expect when expecting/the first year/the toddler years) and they are great. Will hunt for this one too

emmab, how far along are you anyhow?
I have all of those books, plus the eating one....I wish I would of had the eating one with my first pregnancy, by the time the 3rd time came around, I knew it all, but, bought the book anyhow

I am 8 weeks pregnant right now, and Bubs is due Jan 5. So you reckon that eating book is worth the investment...it is NZ$50 plus here (about $20 US I think that equates to)

emmab, I was thinking I'd send you my book, but, sending from Canada to New Zealand would be worth more then the book. But, I'm not sure.

preggers

enmab,

Eating disorders & "ratios" aside, I've been through several pregnancies and found that during the whole process, I would crave or desire different foods at different times. Starch in the first couple of weeks, protein after the first trimester, lots of fat toward the end... etc.

Babies are built in stages - like skyscrapers :) - and you made need different types of nutrients at different times during the process.

Remember that you are going to need to actually gain fat weight (not just baby weight) to support nursing. Your blood volume goes up during the first couple of weeks - which is why you may feel hotter than normal, and why your BP may elevate slightly. This increased blood volume also causes "weight gain".

You don't want to deny yourself anything, because it may contain a particular nutrient that is absolutely vital for the baby's development.

The best advice I can give, having had a couple of 'em myself, is take your prenatals and make sure every carbohydrate counts. Worry more about making sure you get what you need - protein, EFA's, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals, than not eating what you shouldn't.

If you want to eat carbs - make them high fiber, nutrient dense, whole grain carbs. Eat fruit instead of sugar sweets.

Don't worry about ratios now - just make sure you eat a well balanced, WHOLE food diet with your supplements. If you have cravings after that, you should probably give into them.

In both of my pregnancies, I craved roast beef constantly, the whole way through. Must have needed protein, which makes sense, since at the time I used to live on pre-packaged casserole stuff like Hamburger Helper, and Ramen Noodle soup.

at the moment my cravings are...
icecream
chocolate
toast

three things I hardly ever eat (I tell a lie, I love icecream) It seems like I am eating the foods I usually dislike ie starchy carbs etc, and hating the foods I usually love ie vegetables. My diet at the moment sucks...I try to eat as balanced as poss, but I am sure it isn't great, so I am going to check out a prenatal multivitamin. I have been taking folic acid since 3 months before I conceived, so that one is OK. Hopefully it will all settle down after 12 weeks or so. This is a new thing for me, I usually eat 99% normally during my pregnancies.
Thanks for the book offers, but I have found one in NZ for NZ$25.00.

btw, that book "What to eat when you are expecting", the latest copy here is 1986, so does anyone know if there is a more recent edition???
