Deadlifts for reps

Citruscide said:

Yeah... I've done my workout like this before...

185 x 1, 225 x 1, 275 x 1, 315 x 1, 315 x 1, 365 x 1, and then 405 (just recently) x 1, 405 x 1 --

But I've also done -- 185 x 10, 225 x 8, 275 x 6, 315 x 5, 365 x 3 and 405 x 1 -- took alot of concentration though....

C-ditty

i dont understand the point of all the one rep sets...

but the second example is what i do all the time, i can build size and strenght..

Nearly evey time I have done high rep deads (aka the 500 x 13 and the 500x15) my back has been royally messed up. The jar that the spine takes is horrible. If you must do reps...sit the bar down, stand up, re grip and pull again.

The deadlift CAN hurt you if your form is not perfect. A little out of line and you are in DEEP crap for a long time. The ONLY time I ever do deads for more than singles...is with 315 or below (my 1RM is 680-730).

I never made fun of you either...

I know man. I was just kidding about that.

And I agree with you. Part of my fear is that, like you say, the minute you lose your form, you pay for it big time. Maybe there's a happy medium here for DLers who aren't really going for strength.

I always do reps on deadlifts!!! How else am I supposed to build size in my back? I incorporate deadlifts off the rack and it is common for me to perform sets of 10 with 525lbs. It is amazing how the low rep craze has affected people. Remember, several people are training for both size and strength and that is me! I have no interest in powerlifting, but I can still build a powerful physique.

This is why I advocate lower rep sets, ie 5 reps, for exercises like deads, it's much easier to maintain form but its also plenty to grow
