contraceptives and thyroid hormone drug interactions

posting this for my gf.
she's recently started contraceptives and I was wondering if there are any known complications or bad interactions with thyroid hormone stims like Tiratricol.

Quick background. She's been taking 1mg/day Tiratricol. She been able to lose about 1kg/week. She works out about 5 days/week and has been keeping with a mod carb/high protien diet and 5 small meals/day. She has a relatively tough work schedule so getting in the meals and workout is challenging.

Tiratricol is a naturally occurring metabolite of the endogenous thyroid hormone triodothyronine (T-3). The medical use for thyroid preparations is for the treatment of thyroid dysfunction and obesity. The thyroid gland in fact produces two primary hormones, identified as T-3 and T-4 (thyroxine, which Converts to T-3 in the body). Together these structures are the main regulators of the body's metabolism. Tiratricol is a rapidly metabolised form of the T-3 hormone. When administered, this substance should markedly increase the metabolic rate. This is noted by an increase in the conversion rate of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. This basically means that the body will utilise nutrients at a much faster speed, due to increased cellular activity.
Users find the metabolic boosting effects of tiratricol exceptional for burning off excess body fat. Even without extreme dieting it can lower subcutaneous fat stores, bringing about a harder, more defined look as muscle features become more visible. Without the use of thyroid hormones, the user may need to diet much more to achieve this result. This is often done at the expense of muscle tissue, as it is difficult to retain this while the proper nutrients are being restricted.

Being such a mild product, tiratricol reaches maximum effectiveness at a daily dosage of about 1 mg per 50 lbs of bodyweight. Tiratricol has a half-life of approximately six hours, so the daily dosage should be divided evenly through the day to keep blood levels more uniform. Tiratricol administration will not induce a true replacement metabolic rate like other thyroid hormones and is by far the safest thyroid option. Users are able to increase their metabolic rate only equivalent to the upper range considered normal and acceptable through out administration. This is typically a very significant increase and considered highly effective by most users.

thyroid hormone / sex hormone - wouldn't expect any interaction - does it say anything on the bottle? Also ask the OB/GYN. Didn't they take stuff like Tiratricol off the OTC market about 4 yrs ago?

Try here as well since we don't know her birth control brand: http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/Interaction/ChooseDrugs
no particular warnings on either bottle.

in the US, brands like "Tirac" were taken off the market which contained unregulated doses of tiratricol.

Overseas (like here in Asia) its still readily available.
Thanks for the feedback SASSY.

I don't mean to hijack your post..but a question for Sassy...I was put on synthroid and cytomel for VERY LOW thyroid function...the cytomel is suppossed to mimic t3..., but I have had NO WEIGHT LOSS from the meds...after reading this about Tiratricol, I am concerned about muscle loss. Sounds like this Tiratricol will prevent it and still keep my levels where they need to be. Lastly, why is it no longer available in the USA?

Thanks!

The idea w/ t3 is that it eats everything - muscle & fat indisciminantly. But I'm guessing if you were put on those per doctor script, then the dose is intended to enable your thyroid activity to be 'normal' - as w/ all hormones, they work optimally when the amount is 'perfect' for your body chemistry, and I guess from a hormone replacement therapy standpoint, 'optimally' would be the amount produced at your peak age, e.g. 20-21 yrs old. So "more" isn't better - but rather just enough. So if you are at a normal level per hormone replacement, then I'm guessing it is "just enough" and shouldn't 'eat everything'.

Tiratricol -- this was back around 2001-ish when it was pulled - like iHulk said - unregulated amounts of the active ingredient. The supplement companies got away w/ a lot of stuff before the FDA started looking into things & clamping down -- you've seen all the uproar about ephedrine...

great post sassy.
its really a shame that people abused a lot of OTC products that actually worked; they get banned and then it seems like we are treading in the dark corners of the universe from some sketchy drug dealer to acquire some relatively harmless products that have been poorly labeled by the media/FDA ...
