Computer geniuses, I have a question for you.

Is there any way to get an IP address or the location of a person who makes a post on an internet message board such as Yahoo or something similar? If so, how do you do it?

The only way I know is to have the board administrator
look up either the user@machinename or ip address.
Then with tcpip command like "host <ip>" you can get
the user and fully qualified machinename.
That still probably won't give you a place, but might
get you down to the level of business@city
If they're coming in thru something like AOL, you would
have to have a court order to get that info.

john is correct.

unless they are coming from a corporate firewall, the closest you are going to get is there general area. Unless, you work for network solutions...

Agreed as well.. It's fairly simple to track down AVERAGE user's on the internet. The FED's do it all the time.

It does require a Judge's order to get it from a commercial site and even then it MAY only get you so close to their real location/identity.
