CLA Question

Hello!

I was wondering if anyone has tried using CLA to help weight loss. I've heard good things and bad things about it and just wanted to know if anyone has tried it or knows anyone that has.

Thanks!

Good question. No, no one here that I know of, but maybe someone will speak up.

It's important to know that there are fundamentally different CLA products. CLA isn't a food, like chlorella for instance which you can also buy in a bottle in little tabs in a health food store. CLA is a product that manufacturers are creating synthetically in a lab and they can differ totally.

There are different isomers in CLA products. Based on some research, one isomer seems to tend to enlarge the liver a bit (not good) and the other perhaps not. The process that's now been patented uses a mixture of the two isomers and can be found searching for the keyword "Tonalin".

It's important to know though that there is conflicting evidence on the efficacy of CLA for facilitating fat loss. Some research shows no effect at all.

You need to take 3 grams a day to get the amount used in the Tonalin research which showed a significant fat loss effect.

I used the Tonalin CLA for three months in the recommended dosage (3.4 g/day) and did not see any spectacular resullts- I really did not notice any difference to be honest. I don't take it any more, for me, it seemed like a waste of $$.

Thanks for sharing that, Trex. Looks like the thread starter isn't too interested in actually following up on this topic.

I read the abstracts of about a dozen studies, and the results were at best mixed. CLA doesn't seem to offer a hope of potential for bodyfat loss.

It would be hard to determine if fat lost was actually from the CLA or diet/exercise too I think.
I tried it with the off chance/faint hope it might be some kind of wonder drug...yeah I had that "stinkin thinkin" too, busted :)
I tell you though, if it did work well, we would probably be hearing a lot more about it in the mainstream news etc... :)
