Dear Senator ( your State Congressmen here)
My letter is in regards to bill which is proposed to increase the penalties for the possession of anabolic steroids. I believe if this bill is passed into law that many hard working American lives will be negatively affected.
Let me begin by saying that there are many mistruths regarding anabolic steroids and their potential negative side effects. You would be surprised to learn that there has not been one death in the United States which has ever been linked to the use of steroids. You might also be surprised to learn that during the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 1993 the FDA, DEA, and American Medical Association were all opposed to the passing of that bill. I would also like to point out that the majority of steroid users are neither teenagers nor athletes. The majority of steroid users are job holding American citizens in pursuit of a better physique and use steroids in a controlled manner in order to achieve the body they desire.
The typical steroid user eats a controlled regimen of food in order to build ones body to a bigger or more desirable point. The typical steroid user also attends the gym regularly and lives a generally healthy lifestyle, often ignoring the trappings of society such as alcohol or cigarettes, which both happen to be much more life threatening than the use of steroids. Can you tell me why the government would seek to punish these hard working citizens who only wish to achieve a better physique? The typical steroid user can be your family physician, your attorney, the person building your home, millionaires, etc. The typical steroid user holds a steady job and is a productive member of society. The typical steroid user is not robbing and killing people in order to get money for their next ‘fix’.
Why when obesity in America is at an all time high, and hundreds of thousands die each year from cigarette smoke both primary and secondary, and thousands are killed each year from alcohol poisoning and drunk driving accidents? These are significant numbers, yet there has not been a single death in all the years this country has existed that can be attributed to steroid use. The media and the government have professed the danger that steroids present, yet I have not heard them actually point to ONE medical journal or article which can support such claims. I have not heard them point to one specific side effect which can be scientifically proven.
Steroids are not physically addicting. The potential for abuse does exist but only in the form of bad judgment by the user. We trust citizens each day to make the right decisions driving their vehicles, which can lead to death instantaneously, yet we license hundreds of millions of drivers who have the potential to kill. In contrast, steroids do not have the ability to kill, and most likely not even on gross error of the user. If a person were to take a mega-dose of an oral or injectable steroid the most they may feel is a slight stomach ache or nausea. With other drugs such as cocaine, crack cocaine, methamphetamines, and prescription drugs death can occur with only a slight overdose. I do not hear Congress proclaiming the dangers of these drugs with the zeal that they have against steroids.
Sir, may I ask you a personal question, do you believe that the founding fathers envisioned this? Do you believe they envisioned a nation where the government took away the peoples conscious choice to put a particular substance into their bodies? Do you believe the founding fathers would view a population of 350,000,000 people as too ignorant to make the choice of what substance they should put into their bodies? Furthermore, do you believe that you and your constituents have the wherewithal and even the right to make that decision for us? In some instances I can see this being justified with drugs such as crack cocaine which cause crimes and interfere with the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness of the rest of the nation. However how can you presume to bring the same judgment against a substance which causes none of these problems.
You and your constituents are proposing sentences as long as 25 years for the possession of anabolic steroids with the intent to distribute. Your new classification for what constitutes a dosage unit is a gross injustice. The proposed guidelines are that 1 tablet=1 dosage unit, and that every 0.5ml of liquid= 1 dosage unit. You will then obviously set a limit at what total amount of dosage units will equal possession or distribution. I must urge you of the danger of passing such a bill. The typical steroid USER could have in his possession for a planned steroid cycle, as much as 100ml’s of liquid, and up to a couple hundred steroid tablets, and these are modest numbers. Is it Congress’s intention to try and put honest, hardworking, otherwise law abiding individuals in jail for 25 years for seeking to better their own physiques? Sir, I must say that this is a tragedy if this is in fact the intent behind such a bill. Sir, I would first propose laws against serving McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, and other fast food restaurants, which I assure you are much more dangerous than controlled steroid use and in this case there is factual evidence to support such claims.
In closing, I urge you and your constituents to reconsider such a harsh bill that would undoubtedly affect the lives of hardworking citizens who are contributing positively to society yet are involved in a lifestyle which has been ostracized by the sensationalist media and over zealous politicians looking to make a name for themselves.
