high carbohydrate consumption increases brain levels of serotonin and causes
improvement in mood, appetite, food cravings, and overall well being

What's more, apparently, some cases of depression are influenced by reduced quantities or activity of serotonin in the brain

that's why, taking some carbs is a good deal

Carbs are not evil ! (just as fat is not evil)
moderation is the key

My sense of well being improved as I cut carbs. Maybe it just me. More than likely it was due to stabilization of blood sugar, and getting off the "roller coaster". I now focus most of my carbs around working out and I feel fine.

I agree. I feel and perform 100% better when I consume adequate (clean) carbs. My mood stabilizes, I can think better in my studies, I don't feel the urge to binge or eat junk, and I get much much more out of my training. My macronutrient ratio is still right on the money, and I cycle them lower on non-training days, but since I stopped being so paranoid about my actual carb count, nothing but good stuff has happened. Granted, it's just what works for my body, but I'm glad I found a happy medium. ;)

I had a hard time, mentally, on a strict low carb diet as well. Getting a graduate degree and low carbs did not work for me. I have since kept to "clean carbs" and life has been much better.

Excellent post. Balance is essential to achieving desired consequnces. Consume carbs when you need them, not when you want to, and you're golden!

I did a keto for 4 months between late last november to late february

as a result i lost alot of weight
didn't looked incredibly ripped though :(
suffered from constipation, insomnia and muscle fatigue
energy levels were good after the inital phase but i decided to reintroduce carbs, 40% of my calories now , looking ripped and doing well in the gym so for me (some people do well on low carbs so im not discounting their worth) Low carbs didnt work

Hmmmm.....

One might be a little more cranky at times at times and begin to actually think carbs are callin to them by first name, but looking ripped boosts my mood. Again though, everyone is different. We all react differently to do different things.

From a physiological standpoint, its the the low carb phase or the carb up phase that cause the mood swings general malaise associated with CKD's, but rather the process of cycling itself. Try going into deep ketosisand NOT doing a carb up for 2- 3 weeks. You will be pleasantly surprised about the mood question.

Low carbs for me for a day, or even for a meal takes an effect. I am still hungry and I can't function right. Balance has always worked for me-- as well as proper spacing of meals. So, maybe I can fool my body into acting like it has overly sufficient carbs while actually I am depleting them slowly? I don't believe in separating days, but actually thinking of weeks and time as continuous. In other words, one day's food is not as important as a string of day's food. (maybe I am just crazy--- or on to something)
