Ok from what I understand, San Antonio is favored to win by 4 pts. Hence the -4. If a team is +4 they are favored to lose by four. If San Antonio only wins by 3, then Memphis wins the bet.

I thought it was the opposite if its the minus sign that means they are favored to lose?

The Spurs are favored by 4 points (-4 = favored team). If the Spurs win by 2, then Memphis covered the spread of +4, or ATS, against the spread. If the Spurs win by 5, then they covered. If the Spurs win by 4, then there is a "push" and no action takes place (you get your initial investment back).
