I talk a lot to the trainers in my gym. Some of them are cool, but some of them make me wonder how they got their certificate. ONe guy actually didn't know what the eccentric movement of the lift was.... what??? How is that possible. Makes me think i should be a personla trainer cause i dont have to know dick to make money :) I think i will look into it!

I would say yes. Many gyms require that you go through their training course to be one of "their" certified trainers. I've looked at LA Fitnesses materials, and it is quite possibly the most insulting listing of crap I've seen in my life.

If you go to a more accredited course, then it is more difficult... NESTA and ISSA I have now, and I'm working on a ISSA nutritional cert.... let me tell you, takes ALOT of work...

pretty much...because for the average schmoe, most of the real knowledge that is passed around these boards is overkill....

plenty of unqualified trainers out there. even FAT ones at my gym, I can't believe that wouldn't be a RED FLAG to someone paying $35+ an hour...HELLO??!!

are you kidding??? where do ya live??? in LA- the trainers start at $75/ hr :)

Fatty4u-- the best PTs have degrees (kinesology) or competed in bodybulding/ powerlifting... you can buy a training cert on the internet.

Some certifications you can basically just send away for. Also many gyms don't require there trainers to be certified or if they are going through a course or something they can train people anyway regardless of weather they pass or not. It is crap but even some of the good certifications are mostly just paper.

I am thinking of taking the ACE test in May. I just lost my job and I need cash for little things like rent and food. I think i will try to become a PT, and hopefully i can be a good one. Honestly, though, i think i know more than most trainers at my gym, and i dont even know that much. Most of them are trying to get certificates, but dont have them yet.
