Best Way To Test Bf %???

i see all the threads talking about body fat. what is the most popular way people are testing bf? im sure the most popular is not the best but i wanna do this but not sure if i should use calipers.... thanks

Calipers are fine provided the tech is experienced, knows the anatomical sites and can properly measure them, the calipers are accurate, and the formula used is appropriate for the population being measured.

UW weigh (again with an experienced tech) and accurate RV measure, or Bod Pod. All assuming bone density and whole body hydration is normal.

Hydrostatic weighing is the most accurate, but can get expensive. Usually universities are more than happy to help out. Apply for a fitness experiment program that the exercise physiologists (and wanna be's) are often doing. You'll get loads of fitness tests (BF, max HR, max VO2 etc). Otherwise pay the $120 to get the tests done.

If you use calipers, be consistent. Test an area at least three times to reduce tester error. Don't get discourage if somehow you use a different testing method and find out you're more than you are with the calipers. Calipers can be off even up to 8%

good luck

where can you have the hydro (providing the university in my city doesnt do it) and bod pod done? ...and pooh, is it common place for all universities to do hydrostatic weighing? at this point for an accurate baseline i probably would pay the $120. when you say test 3 times you mean right then or 3x/wk...or what?

At least 3 times right then

Universities/colleges with specilization in exercise physiology usually have Hydro. Some medical schools and hospitals also have them available. Some military installations with Wellness Centers have them, too.

I don't know if you're close to Jacksonville, but I'll ask my BB friend to see if she knows of a place around there.

Florida State has an Exercise Phys Lab that may have hydro, but offer the other tests I mentioned earlier.

Shit, all that is too complicated. All I used for this last show was my bedroom mirror. I think it said I was in the neighborhood of about 4%.

I use my mirror too. Sometimes I'll also use those online calculators. But my thin waist usually screws things up, so I add about 1-2% to be on the safe side.

I've tried calipers, but I kept gettting weird results (that'll happen when you don't know what you are doing).

I'm convinced that most tests are only rough estimates anyway. Even the water tank test can be way off. So don't get caught up with the absolute number. Use the tests to track the CHANGE in bodyfat percent.

Taking a big shit before or after the water tank test will vary your results. Stick to your mirror.
