Best for butt gains?

The single best exercise for developing the glutes is the squat. I am talking real squats. Not hack squats, not smith machine squats. Free weight squats.

With heavy weight joint issues can arise but heavy weights when done right are great for health and training. heavier squats so you are doing 8-12 reps of 3-4 sets would be the right range probably for what you want. Skipping and lunges are also wonderful for legs and health so don't not do them! Lunges work great in the medium to heavy range as well but work your way up. Remember to build your back and core strength because these are needed with good squats and lunges!
