back

In theory maybe but I've never seen it done, why do you ask?

Funny thing with bodybuilding, everything works, I'm sure those isolation machines at the gym will build your back. Is it the best way though, probably not.

Deadlifts are fun once you get 'em down. I've finally gotten my form down, and its my second favorite exercise (bench press would be the first). Do them. Soon you'll need to change your name to tallnbig or something. :D

I believe bodybuilding is all about maximising your returns from the work you are putting in. If you use isolation movements for back or any other exercise for that matter, your returns will be comensurate with the work you are putting in. Concentrate on deadlifts, rows, pull-ups etc and the returns will be maximised. The bonus in terms of added muscle for a little extra exertion is very much worthwhile.

Can you build a solid back without deads?

Yes

Can you build solid legs without squats?

Yes

Can you reach or surpass your genetic potential without squats or deads?

Fuck no, not even close

Don't cheat yourself, hit the deads

Sure: Goodmornings, squat variations, reverse hypers, glute ham raises.

I'd still do deads, of course. But if you cannot do them for whatever reason there are still great alternatives.

I don't think you need to do deads for a huge back

70 degree barbell rows, shoulder width chins and olympics lift hybrids (clean pulls, jumping pulls, snatches and power cleans) and does the trick.

That's all I do and my back is starting to freak out! I'll post a current pic one day - sweeping "Sergio" wing lats and chunky bumps - I think I have good genetics in my back though :)
