I have a question for the competitive bodybuilders. Some bodybuilding nutritionists advise there clients to get off of nutrasweet a few weeks before a show. I don't know the reasoning behind this. Does anyone out there do this? If so, how far out do you cut out the artificial sweeteners?

I dunno, i wouldn't get off it...crystal light all year for me. How about salt sub. though...anyone have any input on salt sub. usage???

I drink a lot of crystal light also as well as diet coke. I hate dropping it before a show and I don't know why it is necessary.

I've heard that too, but couldn't do it either. I think it has several possible factors that propose this assertion:

1. Some say that artificial sweeteners will increase insulin response on possibly fluctuate blood sugar even though the calorie amount is minimal to none and it contains no sugar. This could possibly be seen by some as not something you would want to occur close into a show because it might hinder ultimate fat loss and tightness. Others have said that this theory is irrelevant.

2. Water is definitely the best thing to drink no matter what, but even with the added artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and color Crystal Light would be the next best thing. You also have to worry about drinking diet soda's that might be high in salt or caffeine in last week attempts at getting ready for a show. Depending upon the individual salt my need to tapered and caffeine may need to be discontinued, especially the last week before a show.

Now, besides those theories I'm not really sure, but honestly IMO I don't it really will matter too much.

I think it's just one less thing to worry about how your body is going to react to.

I think you nailed it with number one. I read a scientific study someplace that talked about that. I was drinking some Propel water each day. Read the study... dropped it... and lost 5lbs!!!
A buddy of mine who competes nationally does carry around Splenda though. Not sure if he uses it to cheat or its safe.
Stick to water or green tea!

Damn it! Decided to read my post and noticed how small I look in my avatar! Body Dismorphia Round 1,037,021!!!

In response to the first theory: I have a fast metabolism and take relatively high carbs all the way until contest day. I am also an insulin dependent diabetic so I know exactly how much insulin I need to counteract what I ingest. I have heard that theory before also but it just doesn't make sense to me.
