Kevin Turner, Microsoft's Chief Operating Officer, told partners during his Worldwide Partner Conference keynote not only about the upcoming Microsoft Stores this fall to be placed near Apple stores but also about how Apple's lawyers wanted Microsoft to take down their Laptop Hunter ads. Here's the story he told (keep in mind that it's coming from a Microsoft executive):

And so we've been running these PC value ads. Just giving people saying, hey, what are you looking to spend? "Oh, I'm looking to spend less than $1,000." Well we'll give you $1,000. Go in and look and see what you can buy. And they come out and they just show them. Those are completely unscripted commercials.

And you know why I know they're working? Because two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department saying, hey -- this is a true story -- saying, "Hey, you need to stop running those ads, we lowered our prices." They took like $100 off or something. It was the greatest single phone call in the history that I've ever taken in business. (Applause.)

I did cartwheels down the hallway. At first I said, "Is this a joke? Who are you?" Not understanding what an opportunity. And so we're just going to keep running them and running them and running them.

The most recent Laptop Hunters ad features Matt and Olivia, who are looking for a $700 computer they can use to share pictures of their son Jayden with friends and family. It needs to have a large screen and great battery life, and of course they find their dream machine:

These are the best ads Microsoft has run in a while; they're clearly working, but we're not sure Microsoft should keep them going for much longer. Hopefully the software giant will think of something fresh once Windows 7 rolls out.

And I have a frigging computer programming degree and have never, never in my LIFE touched an Apple, but nothing can possibly achieve the 7th level of hell that is Microsoft. I will never give them another dime of my money.

The next time I get a computer for pleasure (not work) it will be an Apple. For work, my husband will happily clone my Windows98 SE until I say I don't need it anymore (he thinks Linux may run a DOS based application, I'm not sure ...)

I got sick of the changing platforms every other year and our paying for it and the damned things not being sufficiently backwardly compatible.

I run both and there is no comparison. My one windows laptop gives me more maintenance hassle than my mac laptop, kitchen office computer, office computer, daughter's laptop and girlfriend's laptop combined -- easily 2-3x less effort, actually.

It's all out there on the internet. You just need to do a few weeks of research to get all the switches correct. Between now and then, the guy with the dildo has already jammed it up your butt and you can feel it in your back molars.

Well, I could basically say the same thing about 98SE, y'know. The problem with anything after 98 is that it doesn't have a DOS shell. Graphics and entertainment shit makes my computer cry. I had a lot less browser issues after I started using Mozilla.

The single best program for what I do is a super stripped down word processing package. Microsoft Word is an enormous, non intuitive, cumbersome piece of absolute shit that doesn't come even close to Wordperfect. Even the more recent versions of Wordperfect don't come close to the streamlined efficiency of the DOS version of Wordperfect.

But I do confess, I'm in a HUGE minority. Medical and legal transcription are the only fields that worry only about actual content as opposed to content and impressive presentation and between that damned Dragon company and India, work keeps getting harder and harder to find.

Shut down for Windows updates or extended leaves. Rebooted for any installs that required it. Used sleep mode whenever the PC was going to be idle anyways.

Ahhh... but is that Knoppix with our without the -Utv -x=offset -z=nodelay -mn fileio -b=sysout -c=syserror command?

And don't forget the -r and -z switches, but you only need those if your graphics adapter doesn't map the addresses in the 0xB8000-0xCFFFF range. Otherwise just specify "xconsole" at the startup prompt before switching to a runstate other than 0 or 1. But then of course, if your runstate is 6 or higher, I'd also make sure your /dev/fdx files have all been mounted with the -rxonly option or you're going to have to recompile the kernel with the script found in the /usr/kernel/lib/io/option3383623.3385-234io/lib/etc/bin/scripts directory. Feel free to modify that script as well if your cd rom drive isn't recognized.

It's all out there on the Intrawebs. Just do some research and Linux can be fun and easy!

I'll admit that Macs are more streamlined for memory hungry apps like audio/video stuff and for that they're great. For everything else there is a Windows app that works just as well. Hell even some PC based audio/video offerings run smooth as hell provided you have the hardware for it and your OS decently tuned and free of bloatware. Not to mention it will likely cost a fraction of what a similar Mac setup would, especially if you build it yourself. Customization and versatility ftw.

Sounds like Windoze frustration has taken its toll on someone.

Just switch to a Mac. You'll lead a more content, relaxed lifestyle.

P.S. You know many mac users look a windows users like windows users look at Linux users, don't you? To a windows user, it's funny to watch someone turn to linux only to find that now the linux user has a new part-time job -- maintaining their linux box. To a mac user, a windows user has done the same thing -- albeit on a smaller scale.

I'm "assuming" not well cause all the game developers are using Dx9 or Dx10.....I'm "assuming" this means these games cannot run on linux whatsoever. But have people figured out a way to get linux to run windows games? Do game developers even include linux support in mainstream PC games?

John Carmack (Doom, Quake, etc.) is a Linux freak, but he's also become an iPhone freak lately too. He's one of the only top tier developers who supports Linux. Other than that it's pretty much left up to the mod community to port major titles over.

This is why PC gaming will always be around. By the time consoles are able to have that type of community influence on games they will have become PC's themselves.
