Anyone ever made sushi at home?

I dont think it would be that hard, for a california style sushi roll, you just gotta get sticky rice, seaweed, avacado(I like avacados on mine anyway), imitation crab, and the raw fish on the outside, do you think I could get this from a regular grocery store, especially the raw fish? or would I have to go to one of those odd oreintal market things?

also was it cost effective compared to eating sushi at a restaraunt?

I got my b/f a sushi making starter kit for his bday, that has everything you need, except vegetables or fish. He didn't make any yet though.... Got him a set of sushi plates and stuff too. Now I'm just waiting for him to make me some :p.

it's not that hard. My g/f signed us up for a sushi class 3 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure tuna used for sushi is like $12 - $15 or so a pound. If you want to get tuna, ask the fish guy at your grocery store for tuna you can make for sushi. He'll know what to get. You don't need to go to the asian market for that. You need to get the thing you have to roll the sushi in... I don't know what it's called. And you should wrap it in plastic wrap, so it doesn't get all nasty from the fish and rice.

Dude I did everything you just mentioned. But you goto to to a oriental market to get all the stuff. Make sure you put plastic wrap on the bamboo roller otherwise the rice will stick bad to it. Make sure you wash your hands alot too(the rice is sticky) and another piece of advice only use seaweed that you just opened(within 3 or 4 hours) because it goes bad fast once it hits air.

But the asian market will have everything you need. And yes you will save a ton of money(over half or even more depending on how many people you are serving and if you eat alot rolls per person.

this isn't going to help much but you'd probably have to go to a place where you live that has a high asian population. Also maybe try any Whole Foods supermarkets, they might have what you need. But the tuna you can get anywhere.

yeah, MN has a giant population of asian americans as well as a ginormous population of asian immigrants, they are actually all over,

fyi, I was just being stupid asking if anyone knew a market by me, becuase obviously they wouldnt, guess that one went over your head mang

Just make sure you get sushi grade fish from the market, luckily I have a chef in town that orders it for me. Wasabi can be found in almost every grocery store now a days. The key is in the rice.... Buy a good quality rice like Nishiki then sugar, rice vinegar and wooden rice spoon, the wood will help soak up extra moisture. Fold the rice so you don't crush the grains and take the time to fan it. Makes all the difference in the world. An asian market is a good bet for more exotic items like eel if you like or a good quality snapper or sea bass. If you like the eel the sweet soy is a pain to make but well worth it as is the ponzu.

Here is a link to buy some decent sushi grade fish...

Have fun... I am going to have to head to get some sushi now.

i made it with avacado, smoked salmon(lox) special rice, seweed and used a wrapper thing...

its pretty good but not as good as in a restourant. agoood experiment if you have the time to cook it- it takes like 30 minutes+ to roll and cut etc depending on ho wmuch u have

I tried it once, it didn't turn out as planned. After it was completed, it looked like I had a burrito run over by a truck.
