Planning on taking the wife to Hvar Island:

Probably for a week or so then slipping down south to Montenegro for a bit:

They not only have some nice hotels, but renting a villa is pretty reasonable as well.

Anyway, if anyone has been around that area some feedback would be appreciated.

Wow looks beautiful. Would I be correct in guessing it'd be a cheap vacation, travel expense notwithstanding? Was there a travel package for that area or did you have to do the bookings directly?

Been looking around and so far the only packages Ive found are guided tour packages which do not tickle my fancy. I'm not planning on a cruise, so bookings directly would be the way to go.

But yeah, the airfare alone would be more than 2 weeks in a 4 star hotel there. The Hotel Amfora, for example, I've found at $680 for 7 nights.

Not too shabby.

That's what I figured. 4 star hotel....that'd be awesome. Damn. Sounds like it could be a great out of the way vacation find. Those are the only kind I like. The typical overly popular touristy places suck.

I have been to Croatia. Its a beautiful place.

Look like a Ghetto form of Greece

go to the greek islands instead

"Mykinos"

"Santorini"

Greece blows. No offense. Aside from Santorini, everything was dirty as shit and fucking expensive.

prior to the Euro, the Greek isle trips were super super cheap. Went with the family in '99 and it was awesome, and everything was like ridiculously inexpensive.

Four course gourmet meal? 50¢. Site seeing tour by boat? 50¢
3 nights in grand hotel with magnificent view of sea? Oh that is expensive, sorry. 75¢ please.

Dunno what it's like now.

Ya, western Europe = no go. Fuck going to Paris.

Croatia, Montenegro, Istanbul, etc is where its at.

Wow, really? My recollection was everything was cheapo.

Agree that Paris was most unpleasant for many reasons. I wish everyone would boycott that place for 365 days so the snotty assed citizens would feel how desperately their city depends on constant tourist money.

Well, I can only speak for Santorini and Athens...so I don't know about the other 200 or so inhabited islands. But apparently you can, since you say "aside from santorini, everything..."

How long did it take to visit over 200 islands? Did you go to the over 1000 other uninhabited islands also? I assume you've also been around the over 40,000 square miles of mainland too?

I enjoyed Santorini. Wasn't too bad as far as being expensive. The single most expensive part was the airfare.

Istanbul, yes. Can I go with you and the wife, 74th?

No.

Youre going to burn in hell.

Maybe it was when and where I went. I remember stopping into a modest restaurant with the wife. No fish on the menu was less than 40 euros. Granted, the dollar was hella weak against the euro which may be skewing my memory, but still...

And no, that wasnt the only restaurant where I noticed that type of price.

could have been his tour package. Maybe they were taking him to all the tourist trap joints that rape them stupid. IIRC we were not on a package. My mother had a Greek-American business associate that gave her a list of places to go, so perhaps we ended up avoiding the overpriced spots.

75th doesnt do tour packages.

Closest Ive ever come was when Ive done all inclusive resorts.

I prefer going and chilling and walking around with my wife doing what we please.

75th - I have never been to Croatia but used to travel for work to Hungary quite a bit and Croatia was like their regional travel destination. Dubrovnik was the favorite hang out and one of the places on my visit list.

You can find some nice pictures on the internets. Check it out.

Her Ladyship and I have been backpacking through Croatia four times, and we absolutely love it there.

Croatia is backpacking heaven. Getting around using public buses and boats are dirt cheap. Private accommodation is readily available and usually very reasonably priced. The standard is a bit 1984, but always clean and tidy.

The food is tasty and very inspired by Italian cuisine. The locals are reserved, but friendly.

If you choose private accommodation, be aware that most of the beds can be a tad short. I am 6’2 with size 13 feet, and have been having some problems finding a bed that fits. Mostly due to the bed post at the end of the bed that is always blocking my feet from stretching out fully, if you know what I mean. You will seldom encounter this problem in hotels, motels and other more professional housing services.

I have only been to Hvar once, and stayed there for two nights only. It gave me the impression of being a wannabe Ibiza sort of place. Not quite my cup of tea, but nonetheless a decent place.

Croatia is not known for its sandy beaches. You will find none on the Island of Hvar, and only a few dozen in the whole country. Most beaches are of the pebbled kind, and you will find small concrete piers and slabs moulded into the cliffside as a replacement. Secluded coves and bays are also very popular. However, you need to be aware of two things. Nudists and sea-urchins. Croatia is very popular among both “species”. The sea urchins have usually been cleared from the more popular spots, but this is not the case of the nekkid men that seems to suddenly pop-out from everywhere. Obviously harmless, but it’s kinda weird seeing nekkid fuglys flapping their jacks about, sunbathing standing up while tugging on their tug-boat. And this is not limited to nude beaches and nude only reserved areas.

Do you have any questions?

Good man, thanks for the feedback.

Having grown up primarily in Hawaii, actually going to the beach isnt a big deal to me. Croatia just seemed like a legit place, and Hvar appeared to be a relatively secluded yet upscale place to simply relax, sit in outdoor cafes, and eat some good food and meet some good people. That and some great scenery.

If there are any not as well known places around that area you could recommend that would be great.

It means ring binder and/or loose leaf binder

I believe the Island of Brac, and especially a place called Bol is supposed to be a fun place. Incidentally, Bol is slang for steroids in my language :)
It is about a two hour boat-ride from Split. The second largest city in Croatia. I have never been to Brac myself, but I have a colleague who enjoyed herself immensely in both Split and Brac. She also enjoyed Hvar, so I do not believe you will be dissatisfied if you choose either place.

We preferred more quiet places, like the Island of Vis, also a two hour boat-ride from Split. And also the town of Trogir, like so many Croatian small towns, is placed on UNESCO's World Heritage list.

You also have Dubrovnik, which is always worth a visit. And since you plan on visiting Montenegro as well, I do believe that
Dubrovnik is the closest airport. The boat to and from Hvar goes two to three times a week. Be sure to check that before you go.

Jadrolinja is the national boat travel company, and is shipping passengers all over the Croatian coastline.

Jadrolinija Ancona - Split Ancona Zadar Dubrovnik - Bari

You're the man. Thanks, I'll look into those.
