when a person is used as a witness for the defense would the prosecution have the right to ask anything? or would the prosecution's questions be limited to subjects mentioned in the direct testimony?

no, the prosecution or defendents can cross testify anyone the other calls!

It depends on what the defense witness was there to testify as to. They can impeach his credibility.

And of course if defense counsel is sleeping, day dreaming about massaging Monica Brant's ass and hamstrings, or just doesn't know what he's doing and fails to object to palpably improper questioning, his adversary can take as much latitude as he wants until the judge possibly steps in.
