patty pan squash tastes like yellow squash. It's not uncommon in the U.S. I see it all the time. It's shaped like a flattened bell.

Paw paw = papaya

Gem squashes (I looked them up on google) are not common here.
 
What's yellow squash? Is it big?

Paw paws are biiig papayas ... er, well, according to what I saw in Japan. Papayas are about the size of 2 small fists, but our paw paws are bigger than your average sweet melon.

You're good makedah! Are gem squashes native to Africa? Never thought to look up veggies on google, lol! I loooooove gem squash, big ones, baby ones, all yummy!

Hey JJ - did Cherie sound funny? I'll never forget how my Canadian colleague last year used to rag me till we were all in tears of laughter about my accent. ESPECIALLY when I said the word "paw" - so I learnt to say papaya and "animal feet", LMAO!!!

She was so funny .... I got to rip her off about some of her pronunciations too, though, ho ho! But Canadians generally DO sound a bit funnier than standard US English. There's something about the way they say their r's - quite attractive actually :)

I love foreign accents :) There was this French girl ... , mm, maybe this isn't the right forum :D
 
Butternut squash and yellow squash are quite different. Butternut squash is a "hard" or "winter" squash while yellow squash is a "summer squash" (like zucchini)

Yellow squashes can get really big, but they are best to eat when they are around the side of the one in the photo.

From what I can tell when I googled it, "gem squash" is a S. African thing. They may grow in other places, but most of the links were about S. Africa.
 
BTW - I knew zucchini had another name. The Brits apparently call them "vegetable marrows" or "Italian vegetable marrows."
 
Yuuum, butternut! I eat butternut every day. Those things are amazing stuffed, roasted, steamed, baked, in soup, curries, pancakes - you name it! They make cool calabashes too :)

How cool - we have our our special unique veggie :)

We call zucchinis baby marrows. I've never seen a mommy marrow though, lol!
