I used to live in Tokyo - back in the old R of SA now, having "reverse culture shock"!
Patty pans are these small yellow ... mmm, how to describe these? OK, imagine 2 flattish cones with frilly edges joined together at the wide part - this gives you a sort of diamond shape if looked at from the side, but a frilly disc if looked at from the top. If you slice through the widest portion ... um... medially, like a cross-section, you have your two coney top shaped things. If you used that wide portion as a stamp, you'd get something similar to a kiddie's pic of a daisy

Are you getting the picture? You get bright yellow ones and green ones, ranging from about 30cm to 60 cm across. I don't think I ever saw them in the States, but then, I wasn't there very long. I DID see lots of different potatoes, though! Their flesh is almost like zucchinis, but less fibrous.
That raspberry idea sounds fabbo, Ranger - will try!
