An unusual question about Protien Powder

No this is not one of those post about how much Protien do I need to take to get big? This is my situation. My doctor has perscribed me a medication that I have to take twice a day but I can't have it with milk or calcium one hour before and two hours after or it will greatly reduce the effectivness of the drug. Does protien powder have calcium in it? If it does I'm screwed cause there is no way I will be able to eat my regular diet (5 -6 meals a day) The label on the container dosen't list that type of information. Just the protien, carbs, fat and the protein profile. Just thought someone might be able to help me out. Thanks!

I dont know every protien powder is different but im using jarrows whey protien 100% natural and its got 8% calcium so yours might, sorry.

Generally companies can't remove calcium without driving up the price too much on their product so chances are its in there. What is the Brand name? What is the drug that would cause this interaction? Can you be more specific?

Without more details, until you're off this med I'm guessing you just going to have to work around it.

I use Pro Lab Pro Whey Protein Powder and the medication is Doxycycline. I though buy law companies had to put on the label what actually was in there product?

I assume you're going to be on the Doxycyline for just a short amount of time. Consumtion of calcium and iron products are thought to reduce the effectiveness of the drug which is why they say to avoid it within two hours. I'd just consume more protein with your other meals to get the same daily total as you normally would. There's no evidence to support the theory that you can only process 30-50 grams of protein at one sitting. Eat more at your other meals and "cram" your protein while your on the drug. You won't see any dramatic change regarding muscle size or strength from doing so.

Is this it? http://www.ihealthtree.com/pro-lab-pure-whey-chocolate-5lb.html

I am NOT a doctor and do not think you should go against his/her advice BUT I can't see the doxy being affected THAT much by a small amount of calcium (i.e. the one I use has 26 mg) ... there should be that amount of calcium in your blood all day anyway.

But yes, by law, it should be listed as an ingredient, if it's not then it should be.

I don't think you can have whey protein without calcium, it comes from milk.

Assuming you are taking this to clear a bacterial infection, let it do it's work, rid the infection then worry about your Protein Power. Make a compromise seeing your health is more important here, and add a real food to get the Protein you need until you can go back to the powder supplement.

You'll probably have to switch to an egg, hemp, or rice protein...I'm guessing, at least. Almost all the protein powders on the market are whey or casein...and since they are both milk derivatives, I figure they are pretty high in calcium.

To meet your protein requirements while on this medicine, you could always increase your meat/beans/nuts ingestion to compensate.

That's what I'm thinking, anyways.

Are you taking doxycycline for acne? If that's the case ask your doctor for Cleocin topical lotion instead. Has the same effects and it's the only thing that ever worked when I was a teenager. I remember doxycycline gave me stomach aches occasionally.

DUH!
I'm an idiot. I forgot the many purposes of those 'cycline's ... I last read it's use for Anthrax, not saying you have anthrax ...it's for acne I would find an alternative like alex suggests. :)
