am I strong enough to compete?

cheesePuss

New member
I've just been turned onto powerlifting.....I originally have been interested in bodybuilding......so I have been training for a few years now.

my current lifts are:

squat 405 2 reps
deadlift 405 4 reps
bench 315 2 reps

I haven't hit any singles yet....
my body weight is 225 around 20% fat

I beleive there is a meet in a few months in atlanta....and I was wondering if you guys think if I'm strong enough to enter.....this would be my first meet

thanks
and any advice for a newbie to the sport would be great

I'm not trying to let you down bro.....but you need to work on those lifts a little, particularly squats and dealifts, but I think you should go to the meet just to get the experience and get used to the atmosphere of the hole thing. Keep training hard and good luck!!!

p.s.
pm me if you need any advice

thanks man for the honest advice ...... p.s. should I worry about putting on weight? should I even try to lean down for the meet...

well....to be honest with you, either way you go (loose a little or gain a little) you're going to be in the hardest of most of the weight classes ( which are usually the middle ones). But if I had to choose one, I'd say loose some. The lighter you are the better, in any weight class. If I were you I'd just focus on strength for right now. Good Luck!!!

p.s.
pm me if you need any advice and I'll see what I can do!

Anyone is strong enough to compete...your only real competition is yourself. As long as you are stronger than you were yesterday what else can you do??! Now if you are asking if you are strong enough to win...the answer would be no...just for now.

As for what class to compete in normally I would say concentrate on gaining weight and getting stronger. However in your case...20%bodyfat...you can afford to lose a few pounds without losing muscle. Besides losing five pounds to make the 220's can be done in a day. And only losing a couple pounds won't affect your leverage either.

Depending on how long you have exactly I would say try to get up to 235 or so without increasing body fat. Then the last couple weeks drop some fat. Most powerlifters train at about 10-15 above were they plan to compete.

Good Luck

Let me tell ya something competing is a blast! You will have a great time and you wont be the weakest there. I love meets. Like Hannibal said you go and beat your self each time. thats the progress you should look for. And if you plan on sticking with powerlifting then you need the experience.

thanks for all the info guys I really apreciate it!.....The meet is in november....so that gives me some time to work on my lifts and my weight....I'll keep you posted on my progress.

thanks again

Hey bro listen, I was in my first meet last month and had a blast. My weights were not much more then yours, but now I have a starting point for next year, and so will you.

I'm with those guys....you'll have a blast at the meets. and like I've said before (sorry I didn't say it earlier). It's not where you are, but where you're going. That's the truth, just a few words of encouragement. Good Luck!!!

One thing you do notice at meets is the support you get from others when doing your lifts.....they might be complete strangers but they'll still encourage you and help you out if you need it. Pretty cool atmosphere.

yup....I definately like how complete strangers will help you out. My fav. thing about the meets is the badass rush you get before you do the lift. I think that's the best feeling in the world (next to sex of course)

compete man!!!!you'll love it.don't wait tilll you're lifting a certain weight..you are always going to want more.don't let the fun pass you by.

it ain't over till it's over
;) :p ;)

Go ahead and compete....just keep beating yourself and eventually you'll be beating everyone else.....I recall Chris Confessore did a 308 bench or something like that in his first meet......he owns a world record at 242 for a 741 bench, so you have to start somewhere......good luck.

thanks for the words of incouragement.....here are my goals for the meet:

squat at least 500
bench 350
deadlift at least 550

that would ad up to 1400
I currently weigh 225 and I'm 23 years old
this will be my first meet
the meet is in november

I'm currently lifting raw....and an experienced lifter is helping me out with my training.

I plan to see where I'm at with my lifts in a month or so

I'll keep you posted

thanks:D

so where can i find out about local meets in my area?

cheesePuss... I am moving to the Atlanta area in Sept. Where is the meet going to be????? There is a bench press competition in Oct in the Atlanta area. Let me know where the meet is going to be and if you want I can tell you were the bench comp. is going to be if you want to get some more experiance. You have to learn to be strict with you lifts so you dont get an disqualified.
Thanks

Hey ViperHMS, the meet is put on by the WNPF it's going to be at the holiday inn by the airport off virginia road Nov 18th. The guy who is putting on the meet said to call back in sept. to get more info. I saw a flyer about the BP comp in my gym....I'm definetly there. I'm not sure if I'm going to compete in it.....right now I'm lifting raw...I dont have a shirt or anything yet. But I'll definetly be at the BP comp either way....so if you want to meet up thats cool.

I competed in some power lifting competitions in HS, but I haven't gone to anything since then. I dont recall them allowing bench shirts....do they do that now??? Yeah if I can make the bench comp. that would be cool to meet up there. thanks keep in touch just pm me. Later

You are strong enough to compete...maybe not win but you can compete.

I'd say go and have fun and get some experience. Remember, we all start at different places and it's not where you start but where you finish.

One piece of advice. Call the meet director or the WNPF National office and talk to them about the rules.

1) Find out what their rules of perfomance are for each lift. Competition lifts are different than gym lifts. For example, there are commands you must obey in the squat or the lift wont count. In the bench, you must stop the bar on your chest, etc.

Learn the rules ahead of time and practice them so you won't make mistakes on meet day.

2) Find out what is legal to wear. Knee wraps, wrist wraps, belt, squat suit, bench shirt etc. For example, a belt with a velcro fastener is not allowed in most meets. Neither are knee wraps with velcro. If you are going to wear any gear at all make sure you have time to get used to it. Most things will change your groove and you don't want to add something new on meet day.

Good luck and welcome to the club!

Oh, I'd say go 220s! You are better off at the top of the 220s than at the bottom of the 242s. Many of the 242s will train at a heavier weight and come down to 242 for the meet. The only time it helps to be lighter is if you tie someone else, then the higher placing goes to the guy that weighed in lighter.

Thanks Jason, I will definetly do that....I am learning alot of things....the sport of powerlifting is way more complicated than people think...than I thought lol....but I love it! There is an experienced lifter in my gym that is helping me out with my lifts....I will definetly find out about the specific rules and practice them.

Also your site is BAD ASS!!!!!!!!! I check it out everyday for insperation....I love watching captain Kirk hit those lifts....it's awesome!

P.S is it cool if I e-mail you for that training cycle?

thanks man:D

Hey Jason! You going to go to WABDL Worlds? At least come to watch. Reno is not that far and I would like to meet you. Jake is going to be there also. If you need want to save money on a room I am bringing a bunch of people, I am sure you could share a room with someone. Wesley

The Mann- That is the weirdest graphic I have ever seen.

CheesePuss- You should definitely compete. It is a sport of personal goals. There is nothing like breaking a long time personal record in front of a crowd. It gives you a whole new focus and drive. It is great having specific goals to shoot for too. Just do it! You will find out why the rest of us like it so much.

Hi Wes,
To be honest, I hadn't thought about it. I don't keep up with WABDL much because they exclude my favorite lift.
I would like to meet you guys though. We'll see how my qualifiers shape up for next year. There are lots of meets I'd like to do but two main ones and I'll need to qualify for those so that is a priority at this point.

Anything is possible though. I have some buds that may go so I may go to watch. There is a high probability that I'll be in Oregon in March for the USAPL Oregon meet though. Several of us guys from California went up there in 2000 and had a blast so we may caravan up with a few more guys this time.

just a little progress report.....I pulled 465 for a single last night...I felt strong and had a good lock out. I plan to hit 550 for the meet
