Adding pilates or yoga into the mix.

I was wanting to add pilates and yoga into my weekly routine since I'll have some extra me-time. If I did pilates only once a week and yoga once a week would that still be beneficial?

Both have a purpose. Depends on what is "beneficial" for you. 1x/week probably won't create catastrophic changes for ya, but I think the stretchign is great and my mom swears by her pilates class.

I really like doing Pilates/Yoga & used to do it only 1x a week with no issues....

I enjoyed it!

I know you are right ... I know ... But DAMN, it is tough to approve something endorsed by Dr. FatBoy Weil and Madonna.

Yoga & pilates existed before those people so I wouldn't be too worried about it. These people have no impact on my life or my decisions. :)

I tried one yoga class at my gym but the chick teaching spend about 1/3 the time yakking about why this or that position is important. That's fine, I'm just here to stretch. Ugh.

Thanks everyone for your input! I used to do them both regularly and quit because I couldn't find the time.. well, I wouldn't make the time. My muscles have been really tight this week, I think from increasing cardio, so it's definitely time to incorporate something! Unfortunately, I've never been one to stretch much after a workout.

I think you will love yoga for stretching. I take it and plan to do it 3 times a week but its hard when you lift 5 days a week and cardio just as much. :C
I asked my naturopath how often you have to go to reap benefit cause he teaches it and he said that at least 3xs a week will help. I also do it for the stretch but I love how relaxed I am afterwards. I didnt like pilates much. I felt like an old woman in pilates. toooooo slllllllllooooooowwwww. lol

Will2BLean, You would benefit from 2 days per week in Pilates, no more than 4. Beauty is, you can accomplish a great stretching, strengthening and leaning program in as little as 30-40 minutes per session. ( I sound like a commercial, sorry) I would cycle the two, Yoga for 6 weeks, then Pilates for 6 weeks.
It will keep your body guessing and you wont get bored. ( if you have a good instructor you shouldn't get bored) There ary MANY types of Yoga, Hatha, Anusara, Anu-Hatha, Bikrams. And now Many types of Pilates, Stott, Windsor, The Method, I would go for Matwork Pilates if you in good shape that is, this focuses on exercises you perform utilizing your own bodyweight as resistance. If you're in so-so shape, try the Reformer.
Find a realllllllllllllllly good instructor that can teach the fundamentals in a way that is understandable and has good verbal ques you can follow, so many people get lost in the group classes because they don't understand how to i.e., "find your Pelvic Floor " muscles, or simply how to obtain "Neutral Spine" you need an instructor that will take the time to show you.
It goes the same for Yoga, a good instructor and you wont be wasting your time!
