ACL & Leg Ext.

I blew out my left knee in wrestling in 1994. I didn't require surgery. However, I did perform some light leg extensions to help promote blood flow. I also performed squats with 115lbs, which was much more comfortable that the leg extensions.

All I can say is, be careful. If you do decide to train, use light weights. . . just enough to stimulate blood flow.

I just recently asked a trainer at my gym and he said that Squats are safer when recovering from ACL surgery.

You should not be doing any kind of extension exercise after ACL surgery for 6 weeks. The graft is not vascular again until after 6 weeks. You can stretch the graft if you do it before 6 weeks.

extensions should be a part of your therapy eventually....they will start you off doing them with a very limited range of motion....

and you will probably do strength tests on a Biodex ROM machine...which is basically a hi-tech leg extension devicewhere they can measure your quad strength as compared to your other quad.

weighted squats however are a no-no for quite a while....i tried to do them about 6 months post-op, and that was not smart. I ended up waiting 11 months post-op before I started doing them again. squats with no weight will be a part of your therapy eventually also.

the first things they should have you do are straight leg raises, and working on bending your knee to get a full range of motion.

good luck
