920lb Deadlift in South Africa

Hi Brothers,

As you may be aware, the WPC held it's annual World Championships in South Africa last week (5 - 10 November). I was unable to attend due to work commitments but my training partner went down to Cape Town for the whole week and witnessed some of the best lifting ever seen on the African continent. He is still on his way back so we have only spoken biefly on the cellphone and I do not have the full results yet.

He did, however, mention that the highlight of the week was a massive 920lb (418 Kg) deadlift by (I think) an American lifter. That must surely be close to the heaviest deadlift of all time! Apparently the guy did this on his second attempt and then barely missed a 421 Kg on his third! I'm hopefully getting the video and some pics soon. Also, somebody benched a 737lb during the bench press World Champs that was held on the 5th.

My training partner also tells me that South Africa did very well, snatching more than its fair share of medals. Even my humble local gym here in Pretoria was well represented and we brought back six medals (including a gold) out of the seven lifters that went down. The seventh guy surprisingly bombed on his squat. Only two weeks before I witnessed him in the gym doing three singles on 430 Kg (946 lb)!! He was having such a bad day that he adjusted his planned 860 lb opener down to 825 lb and simply could not get it up.

If anybody is interested in the full results, I'll see if I can get them...

Cheers,
Arnie

The dl was done by Andy Bolton I beleive. I am pretty sure he is from England. The highest dl of all time -- 925 by Gary Heisey.

my stats guy is working on the results now. The OTHER BIG lift was Becca Swanson's 629 squat at 230 or so bodyweight - wow! Have you guys seen her? She also had a 358 bench and a 584 dead
