Hosts hope to finish World Cup on a winning note
After suffering a heartbreaking loss in their semi-final match against Italy, Germany now turn their sights to third place when they meet the other semi-final losers Portugal on Saturday.
Germany are -135 favourites to win the match Portugal are +375 underdogs The Draw is priced +240
The Germans, who are a perfect 4-0 in World Cup shootouts, were minutes away from penalty kicks in their match against Italy before Fabio Grosso and Alessandro Del Piero both scored to crush the host nation’s hopes of becoming world champions. Portugal were eliminated in a little less dramatic fashion, losing 1-0 to France in regulation time.
Germany had played impressively throughout the tournament. They cruised through the group stage, winning all three games by a combined score of 8-2. Jurgen Klinsmann’s men then knocked off Sweden easily in the second round with a 2-0 victory, but needed penalty kicks to defeat a very talented Argentine side in the quarters.
Meanwhile, Portugal had a little more difficulty in their World Cup run. They earned victories in all three group games, but each match was closely contested. The Selecção then survived a vicious second-round match with the Netherlands, claiming a 1-0 victory before using penalty kicks to settle a scoreless draw in the quarterfinals with England.
German striker Miroslav Klose, who is the leading goal scorer so far in the tournament with five goals, is suffering from pain in his calf muscle and is listed as questionable for Saturday’s match. If Klose fails to suit up for this game it would be a huge advantage for the Portuguese who have yet to face a high powered offence in the World Cup.
