San Antonio (15-7) at Phoenix (9-11)

By DAN PIERINGER, STATS Writer

The San Antonio Silver Stars climbed to the top of the Western Conference with their longest win streak in seven years. The end of that run, however, has them fighting to hold on to first place.

The Silver Stars look to bounce back from their first loss in more than two weeks and protect the top spot in the West on Tuesday night when they visit the struggling Phoenix Mercury.

After dropping consecutive games to Houston on June 24 and 26 to fall to 8-6 on the season, San Antonio (15-7) won seven straight for its longest run since a franchise-record eight-game win streak in 2001, when the team played in Utah.

This year’s streak came to an end Monday night at Los Angeles, as the Silver Stars fell behind 17-4 in the first eight minutes and went on to a 75-62 loss.

“I felt like we could have controlled our own destiny if we rebounded the ball better,” said Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes, whose team was outrebounded 41-24. “I thought they were aggressive the whole night.”

San Antonio managed one offensive board while giving up 18 to Los Angeles. Hughes’ team also committed 20 turnovers that led to 20 points for the Sparks.

Though it has been one of the league’s hottest teams over the last two weeks, San Antonio is clinging to a half-game lead over Seattle in the conference.

The Silver Stars will try to bounce back and maintain that lead when they face a Mercury team coming off another frustrating defeat.

Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter - the top two scorers in the WNBA at 23.6 and 23.3 points per game, respectively - combined for 53 points Saturday night, but Phoenix gave up a season high-tying point total in a 105-97 loss at Sacramento.

The defending league champion Mercury (9-11) dropped to 2-8 against Western Conference opponents. They’ve lost four of five overall after a four-game win streak from June 24-July 1.

“That’s how this league is, you win a few straight, then you go into stretches where you can’t get a win,” Taurasi said. “We’re falling a little short at the end on how to win games lately. We just have to look ahead and not worry about the past.”

The Mercury are looking forward to playing their next three games at US Airways Center. Taurasi and Pondexter are averaging 25.6 points apiece at home, and the Mercury have won three of their last four in Phoenix.

The Mercury lost their first meeting with the Silver Stars 81-76 in San Antonio on May 20. Taurasi and Pondexter combined for 43 points, but Sophia Young led five San Antonio players in double figures with 25.

With that win, the Silver Stars snapped a three-game losing streak against the Mercury that included a two-game sweep in last season’s Western Conference finals.

lol, I went to Rutgers. The womens team outdrew the men in the late 80's. Hell, they used to outdraw the football team in the 90's for some games.

Sure you can handle that big bet?
