United States face a must-win game against Ghana

After a series of surprising results, Group G remains wide open and all four teams can still qualify for the round of 16. But one thing is for sure: anything less than a victory for the United States in their final group match against Ghana would spell the end to their 2006 World Cup campaign on Thursday.

Ghana are +115 favourites to win the match USA are +205 underdogs The Draw is priced +240

World Cup debutants Ghana picked up a huge 2-0 upset victory over the Czech Republic in their last game. Ghana are now tied with the Czechs for second place in the group standings with three points apiece. The USA stunned Italy with a resilient 1-1 draw. It was a bizarre match that saw the Americans go down to nine men only minutes into the second half. The draw gave the United States their only point of the tournament and kept their second round hopes alive.

After being dominated in a 3-0 loss to the Czech Republic in their opening match, the USA played a much better game against the Italians. But their biggest problem continues to be getting shots on target. Claudio Reyna has been the only American to connect with goal so far, and that from a shot that hit the post against the Czechs. In their game with Italy, the United States only score was a result of Cristian Zaccardo deflecting the ball into his own net.

The Americans come into this match without the services of defenders Pablo Mastroeni and Eddie Pope, who both received red cards in their last match with Italy.

The Black Stars also enter this game without some key players. Striker Asamoah Gyan and midfielder Sulley Muntari, Ghana’s two goal scorers from last match, will be forced to miss the game after receiving their second yellow cards of the tournament. Midfielder Otto Addo and forward Mathew Amoah will be forced to step up during their absence.

A win for the Americans and a Czech loss would put the USA through to the next round. A victory for Ghana would guarantee them a spot in the final 16, while a draw could also advance them, depending on the Italy/Czech result.
