Mexico gets set for tough match with Portugal

Coming into their final Group D match against Portugal on Wednesday, Mexico control their own destiny. Their World Cup dreams will either continue to the next round or end in extreme disappointment.

Portugal are +140 favourites to win the match Mexico are +250 underdogs The Draw is priced +165

After being held to a draw in their last match against Angola, Mexico now need at least a draw in their third game to guarantee a spot in the round of 16. A victory would make them the winners of Group D, while a loss would hand the group to Portugal and leave Mexican hopes of advancing in the hands of Iran beating Angola.

Mexico put themselves in this predicament after failing to capitalize on countless scoring chances in their last match against Angola. A 0-0 draw gave them four points in the group standings, two behind leaders Portugal and three ahead of Angola.

If Angola find a way of knocking off Iran in their final match and the Mexicans lose to Portugal, the team with the better goal differential would advance to the round of 16. Mexico currently hold a three goal advantage over the Angolans.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese sit comfortably knowing they have already secured their place in the second round after scoring victories over Angola and Iran in their first two games.

Despite dictating play and dominating the statistics in their first two matches, Portugal have had trouble finishing their scoring chances and have failed to win convincingly. In their opening match against Angola, the Iberians scored in the fourth minute but failed to do any further damage, settling for a 1-0 victory. In Portugal’s 2-0 win over Iran, they didn’t notch their first goal until the 63rd minute.

If either team hopes to go far in this tournament, they can’t afford to let scoring chances slip away like they have been in previous games.
