Argentina and the Netherlands battle for Group C

Argentina and the Netherlands have both qualified for the round of 16 after winning their first two group games. But they face each other on Wednesday to decide which team will finish first in Group C.

Argentina are +100 favourites to win the match Netherlands are +265 underdogs The Draw is priced +215

The Argentines come into this match playing better football than any other World Cup team. After their 6-0 demolition of Serbia & Montenegro, Argentina proved they are one of the favourites to win the World Cup. Bookmakers quickly shortened Argentina’s odds of winning the tournament to 4-1.

With eight goals for and only one against, Argentina come into their final match in good standing, needing only a draw to win the group.

The Dutch have won both of their games so far, but neither was a convincing victory. They edged past Serbia & Montenegro 1-0 and defeated Cote d’Ivoire 2-1. Holland’s attack has proved less potent than expected, but they have compensated with excellent defensive organization.

It’s possible Holland will field a largely second string side against Argentina. With Phillip Cocu and John Heitinga suffering from minor injuries and six other Dutch players on yellow cards, Netherlands coach Marco van Basten will not want to risk losing any of his best players before the second round begins.

Lionel Messi made his World Cup debut as a second half substitution against Serbia & Montenegro and he didn’t waste any time making an impact for the Argentines. Three minutes after stepping on the pitch he set up Herman Crespo for a goal and then scored one himself 10 minutes later.

Crespo and Maxi Rodriguez lead Argentina with two goals each in the tournament. Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie have a goal each for the Netherlands.
