Angola faces Iran in a must win game
After holding Mexico to a scoreless draw in their last match, Angola kept their second round chances alive and are now preparing to play Iran in a must-win game on Wednesday.
Iran are +150 to win the match Angola are +160 to win The Draw is priced +230
Thanks to a courageous performance from their defence and goalkeeper Joao Ricardo, Angola have something to play for against Iran. In their last game Angola kept a dominating Mexican side off the score sheet. Impressively, the Africans managed a 0-0 draw, despite being reduced to 10 men in the 80th minute after Andre received his second yellow card of the match.
Angola’s offence has been nearly non-existent to this point in the tournament. In their opening match against Portugal, the Angolans put only three shots on target and kept just 42% of ball possession. In their following match against Mexico, Angola’s possession increased slightly, but they had even fewer shots on target. The Black Impalas must find a way to boost their attacking potency if they want any chance of claiming a victory on Wednesday.
With the single point they salvaged in the draw, Angola sit in third place in Group D, three points behind Mexico. Mathematically, Angola still have a chance of grabbing the second qualifying spot. They need a victory over Iran and need the Mexicans to lose to Portugal in their final match. The Angolans also need to better Mexico in goal differential, a statistic in which Mexico currently holds a three goal advantage.
Meanwhile, Iran suffered losses in their first two games and will be playing for pride in their final match. The Iranians entered the second half of their first two games sitting level with their opponents. But they could not hold on and wound up conceding a pair of late goals in both games.
Defender Yahya Golmohammadi will miss Iran’s final match with an injured shoulder. Golmohammadi has been Iran’s only goal scorer in the tournament. Andre will be out for Angola because of the two yellow cards he received in the previous match.
