Polish and Ticos play for pride

Since Poland and Costa Rica both have no chance of reaching the round of 16, their head-to-head match on Tuesday will mean little, but pride will be on the line.

Poland are -140 favourites to win the match Costa Rica are +360 underdogs The Draw is priced +240

Poland suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss against Germany after Oliver Neuville scored in the 91st minute to end Poland’s hopes of making the second round. The Poles played a far better match than in their opening game against Ecuador, but it simply wasn’t enough.

Still without a goal in the tournament, Poland’s attack has been lackluster at best. The Poles generated very few chances in both of their World Cup matches so far. On the defensive side of the ball, sloppiness in their opening match resulted in an Ecuador victory. Their defensive game show vast improvement against Germany, however. Goalkeeper Artur Boruc was superb against the Germans, frustrating them all game long.

Meanwhile, Costa Rica are coming off a 3-0 loss to Ecuador. Just like in their opening match with Germany, the Ticos were simply outmatched by a stronger side. Coming into this tournament Costa Rica’s World Cup hopes rested heavily on their defence. That proved disappointing as the Ticos conceded seven goals in their first two matches. Unsurprisingly, they will miss the knockout rounds for their second straight World Cup.

Poland have lost four of their last five World Cup matches dating back to 2002. They’ve failed to score a single goal in those past four games. Considering Costa Rica’s woeful defence, Poland hope to score at least one goal on Tuesday. If Boruc can put together the same sort of performance he did against the Germans, the Poles should also end the tournament with three points.
