Trinidad & Tobago hope to keep second round dreams alive

After giving Sweden and England a run for their money in their first two matches, Paraguay and Trinidad & Tobago are set to face one another in their third World Cup match on Tuesday.

Paraguay are -120 favourites to win the match Trinidad & Tobago are +300 underdogs The Draw is priced +250

Coming into this game Trinidad and Tobago still have a very slim chance of making the round of 16, while Paraguay, who have already been eliminated, will be playing for pride. To reach the second round, T & T will need an upset victory over Paraguay and hope England defeat Sweden in the other Group B match.

It has been an emotional run for both sides so far. Overall, Trinidad & Tobago have been more fortunate than Paraguay. After a 1-0 loss to England (thanks to an own goal in the third minute), Paraguay suffered even more heartbreak in their next match against Sweden. Heading towards the 90th minute, it appeared Paraguay were going to escape with a scoreless draw with the Swedes. But in the 89th minute Freddie Ljungberg found the back of the net to lift Sweden to a 1-0 victory. That sent Paraguay’s second round hopes crashing to the ground. It would be the first time in their last three World Cup appearances that Paraguay failed to qualify for round of 16.

Trinidad couldn’t have asked for a better start in their World Cup debut. They were expected to roll over against Sweden but wound up pulling off one of the biggest surprises in tournament history, holding the Swedes to a scoreless draw. The odds were stacked even higher against the Soca Warriors against England. Trinidad & Tobago were no pushovers though, giving England a good scare up to the 83rd minute where Peter Crouch finally scored. The English would go on to add another goal in injury time to claim a 2-0 victory. But T & T definitely deserved to hold their heads up high after the match.

Both sides played defensive football in their first two matches, sitting back and trying to capitalize on the counter attack.

It will be interesting to see how these two sides approach the match. Trinidad need nothing less than a win to reach the next round. That may force them to open up the game against Paraguay.
