Germany/Ecuador battle for first in Group A
Prior to the start of the World Cup, few would have thought the final Group A match between Germany and Ecuador would decide the winner of the group. But that will be the case when the two sides kick off on Tuesday.
Germany are -240 favourites to win the match Ecuador are +650 underdogs The Draw is priced +300
Playing in only their second ever World Cup, Ecuador have been the biggest surprise so far in this year’s tournament. They upset Poland 2-0 in their opening match and dominated Costa Rica in a 3-0 victory in their second game.
Led by Agustin Delgado and Carlos Tenorio, who have each scored twice, Ecuador posses a quick and dangerous attack. Their defence has been nothing short of brilliant, not conceding a single goal so far in this tournament . Because of goal differential they only need to play for a draw to take the group from the Germans.
Meanwhile, Germany only guaranteed a spot in the round of 16 after Oliver Neuville scored in injury time to give them a 1-0 win over Poland.
The German offence was spectacular in the first match against Costa Rica, scoring four goals. In their second game, however, Germany’s attack was frustrated by the Polish goalkeeper. While their defence looked weak at times against Costa Rica, giving up two breakaway goals to Paulo Wanchope, it improved markedly in the second match and held Poland off the score sheet.
Germany come in as the clear favourites, but Ecuador will hope to continue surprising. They are arguably in better form than the Germans in this tournament.
