Socceroos hope to continue World Cup magic
After staging one of the best comebacks in World Cup history, Australia will have their eyes set for an even bigger surprise when they meet defending champions Brazil in their second match on Sunday.
Brazil are -440 favourites to win the match Australia are +1100 underdogs The Draw is priced +440
The last time the Socceroos participated in the World Cup was in 1974, and they failed to score a single goal. Down 1-0 heading into the late stages of their opening match against Japan, it looked to be their fourth straight match without a goal. But in the final eight minutes of the game the Aussies came back from the dead, scoring three goals and stunning the Japanese into a 3-1 defeat. Tim Cahill scored in the 84th and 89th minutes and John Aloisi added a goal in injury time to give their country three points.
Now Australia get set to meet footballing powerhouse Brazil for their second match. More than likely, the Australians will need even a bigger miracle to snatch a victory from the 2002 champions.
The good news for the Aussies is that Brazil played far below expectations in their opening match against Croatia. They could only manage a 1-0 win over the Croats in a game they were expected to dominate. The bad news for Australia is the Brazilians know they played beneath their potential and will be prepared to raise their game as all great teams do after a bad match.
Ronaldo, who has 12 World Cup goals to his name, was almost lifeless in Brazil’s opening match. Lumbering around for most of the match and repeatedly straying offside, he was taken off in the 69th minute. Despite his poor play, Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira says the striker will start against the Australians.
