Sweden will have to quickly forget about their disappointing 0-0 draw to Trinidad & Tobago. The Swedes must now set their focus on Paraguay, who they’ll meet in their second match on Thursday.
Sweden are -135 favourites to win the match Paraguay are +325 outsiders The Draw is priced +225
After breezing through World Cup qualifying, Sweden were expected to make an impact in this tournament. But those thoughts were erased after a shocking scoreless draw in their opening match against Trinidad and Tobago – a game in which the Swedes were heavily favoured.
Creating chances wasn’t the problem for Sweden. It was finishing them off that frustrated them. The Swedes fire 12 shots off-target and had six stopped by Trinidad goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, who played the game of his life. With their final match coming against England, Sweden can’t afford to drop points against Paraguay. They will have to capitalize on their chances.
Similar to how Trinidad & Tobago stymied Sweden, the Paraguayans gave England a hard fought match in their opening game, only to fall 1-0 after an own goal by Carlos Gamarra. Despite keeping pace with England for 90 minutes, Paraguay know their attack need to be much sharper against the Swedes. The Paraguayans generated a paltry two shots on target against England. They will have to do a much better job on Thursday to have any chance of keeping their second-round hopes alive.
Andreas Isaksson, who missed Sweden’s opening game after suffering a concussion during practice last week, is expected to return as the starting goalkeeper on Thursday.
Nelson Valdez for Paraguay and Henrik Larsson for Sweden will both enter this match on yellow cards.
