5 x 5 on dumbbells is a little strange. I would rather save the 5 x 5 for all barbell exercises. For dumbbells, I think that 8 to 12 reps is sufficient.
I know what you mean about the 10lb increments. There is a company (don't remember the name) that markets magnetic weights in 2 1/2 lbs to add on to the end of dumbells.
I was lifting with my biiig friend one time and he was doing shoulder press. The heaviest DBs the gym had was 100s and he can rep those no problem. We looked around and found some of those 2.5 lbs plates and put one on each side of each dumbbell. Well, at the very top of one rep, when the DBs clanged together, the inner two plates popped off and landed right on his head. It was funny, but the damn things didn't even phase him.
Moral of the story, i dont know how safe those things are.
HOw many 10 lb plates can you get on that thing? It would really fuck with your ROM if you were forced to put 25 lb plates on the sucker in order to get to a desired weight...
your stablizers are weak and are not letting you use the weight that you need to challange the prime movers.
Ps 5 x 5 is just a set/rep prescription.....not some magic work out that has set parameters defind by a guru or magazine.....its just a set and rep prescription and will work with any type of resistance at the right percentage.
I've been using 5x5's with dumbells on flat bench for awhile now. I've noticed great gains.
I am almost able to move up past 85's. I may move up to 90 soon which is a problem because I can barely get the weights up from the floor to my knees so I can lay bakc and start Damn things are so heavy.
I usually do 5x5 dumbell flat press then I switch to a couple sets of 8-10 on incline barbell press

True! You know sometimes i get soo bogged down in the details that i don't take a moment to stand back and see the big picture.
As for my original post here - that i couldn't feel the movement very much - well, i agree that i should go up in weight. I can only go up to the 90s though, which is the highest my gym has got.
But, as for not feeling it, well today my chest is quite sore [2 days after - my usual delay] so i guess whatever i was doing was enough to cause some good soreness.

All right, I checked it out last night and you can fit 6 10's on each side with more than enough room for a collar. 7 will fit, but the collar hangs over the end of the bar just a bit.
