St Louis (17-11) at Houston (18-9) 8:05 pm EDT

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Houston Astros hope to fare better against Chris Carpenter this time around.

The reigning Cy Young Award winner will be on the hill Thursday when the St. Louis Cardinals wrap up their two-game series with the Astros.

Carpenter faced Houston twice in last year's National League Championship Series, going 1-0 with a 2.83 ERA. He was one of the few bright spots in the series for the Cardinals, who lost to the Astros in six games.

This season, Carpenter (3-1, 1.80 ERA) has picked up right where he left off, yielding one run or fewer in four of his last five starts. He allowed one run in seven innings Saturday but did not factor in the decision of a 2-1 triumph against Washington.

Carpenter is 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA in seven career starts against the Astros, including a sparkling 4-0 mark with a 1.85 ERA in five outings against them last season.

Andy Pettitte (1-4, 5.25), who opposed Carpenter in both NLCS contests, will face the righthander once again on Thursday. Pettitte surrendered six runs and 11 hits in five innings of Saturday's 6-3 defeat against Cincinnati to absorb his third straight loss.

The veteran lefthander is 1-1 with a 1.67 ERA in four career starts against St. Louis.

Houston took Wednesday's series opener, 5-4, as Roy Oswalt worked eight strong innings and Lance Berkman drove in three runs.
