NY Yankees (14-11) at Tampa Bay (11-17) 7:15 pm EDT

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- New York Yankees lefthander Randy Johnson will look to end his longest active losing streak against a single opponent when he faces the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Thursday.

After winning his first two career starts against the Devil Rays, Johnson (4-2, 4.71 ERA) has gone 0-3 in his last six meetings with Tampa Bay, dating to 1998. Overall, he has a 4.36 ERA in 53 2/3 innings vs. the Devil Rays.

Johnson will be matched up against Doug Waechter (0-1, 5.95), who will be making his ninth start against the Yankees - his most vs. any opponent. Waechter would like to forget the last time he faced New York as he allowed five runs - three earned - and five hits while not retiring a batter in a 17-3 loss on September 13.

That loss began New York's three-game sweep here after the Devil Rays had won 11 of the first 16 meetings in the 2005 season series. Following their 10-inning, 4-2 triumph on Wednesday, the Yankees have won three of the first four meetings of 2006.

In the last game featuring Johnson against Waechter, the Devil Rays claimed a 4-3 victory after Scott Proctor walked Jonny Gomes with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning. Waechter allowed three runs - one earned - and nine hits in nine innings, and Johnson gave up two runs and five hits in seven frames.

In addition to seeking a rare win against Tampa Bay, Johnson will be in search of a milestone Thursday. The 41-year-old needs three more strikeouts to join Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens as the only pitchers in major league history with 4,400.

The Devil Rays walked reigning American League Player of the Month Jason Giambi twice and hit him with a pitch Wednesday. Giambi has reached base in 27 of his last 43 plate appearances.

After managing just five hits on Wednesday, the Devil Rays have a team batting average of .178 (24-for-135) against the Yankees this year.
