LAA: Gregg(1-0, 0.84 ERA)
DET: Verlander(3-2, 3.52 ERA)
LA Angels (12-16) at Detroit (19-9) 1:05 pm EDT
DETROIT (Ticker) -- Rookie Justin Verlander will look to prolong the life of both the Detroit Tigers' season-high winning streak and the team's remarkable run of dominant starting pitching.
With the Tigers looking to extended their winning streak to seven games, Verlander will take the mound in Thursday's finale of a two-game series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
The hard-throwing Verlander (3-2, 3.52 ERA) has allowed just two runs and 10 hits in 14 innings to win his last two starts. Those outings have come amid a 15-game stretch in which Tiger starters have posted a 1.82 ERA.
Nate Robertson allowed one run and four hits in 7 1/3 innings of Wednesday's series opener, but the Tigers needed an eighth-inning RBI double by Alexis Gomez for a 2-1 triumph. It was just the second RBI for Gomez in 32 at-bats this season.
Robertson's performance lowered the ERA of Detroit's starting pitchers to a major league-best 3.05. He allowed back-to-back singles to Chone Figgins and Orlando Cabrera to open Wednesday's contest, but Anaheim managed just two hits thereafter.
Since posting a 4-0 home victory against the Tigers on April 26, the Angels have produced only 15 runs and 35 hits in losing their last six games.
The first four games between Detroit and Anaheim this season have featured a combined total of only 17 runs.
Kevin Gregg (1-0, 0.84 ERA) will look to carry his solid work in three relief appearances this season into his sixth career start for Anaheim. Gregg has allowed just one run and recorded 11 strikeouts in the last two weeks with the Angels after beginning the year with 10 scoreless frames for Class AAA Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League.
