WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Livan Hernandez looks to continue his success against the Florida Marlins.
Hernandez (1-3, 5.49 ERA) faces his former club for the first time this season when the Washington Nationals and Marlins meet in the finale of a two-game set on Thursday.
The 31-year-old righthander pitched in Florida from 1996-1999 until departing for San Francisco and Montreal before landing in Washington, D.C. last season. His best season as a Marlin was the 1997 campaign in which he earned a 9-3 record with a 3.18 ERA in 17 starts as Florida captured the World Series title.
In 20 meetings with the Marlins, Hernandez owns a 10-5 mark with a 2.66 ERA and a .250 opponent batting average.
Hernandez failed to get a decision in his previous outing as the Nationals fell, 2-1, to St. Louis on Saturday. He yielded a run, three hits and four walks in seven innings.
Florida reliever Josh Johnson (1-2, 3.86) will be making the second start of his career. The righthander moved into the rotation after Jason Vargas was sent to the bullpen. In one appearance against Washington, Johnson struck out two and walked two in two frames.
On Wednesday, the Marlins edged the the Nationals, 6-5, thanks to a go-ahead hit by Hanley Ramirez to plate Dan Uggla in the ninth. Reggie Abercrombie and Wes Helms homered for Florida, which ended a five-game losing streak.
Brian Schneider hit a home run and collected three RBI for Washington, which lost for the fourth time in five outings.
