Carolina at Buffalo 7:30 pm EDT Eastern Conference finals Sabres lead, 2-1
BUFFALO, New York (Ticker) - The Carolina Hurricanes failed in their first chance to regain home-ice advantage in the Eastern Conference finals.
However, the second-seeded Hurricanes have another opportunity Friday as they visit the fourth-seeded Buffalo Sabres in Game Four of their best-of-seven series.
Buffalo leads, two games to one, following a 4-3 triumph in Wednesday's Game Three. Daniel Briere scored a pair of goals and co-captain Chris Drury added a power-play tally for the Sabres, who improved to 5-1 at home this postseason.
Ryan Miller made 24 saves for Buffalo but fellow rookie Cam Ward did not fare as well for Carolina, making 22 stops before he was pulled midway through the second period.
Cory Stillman scored twice and Eric Staal added a man-advantage tally for the Hurricanes, who missed a prime opportunity to tie it with 2 1/2 minutes remaining.
However, Miller made perhaps his biggest play of the game, poking away the puck to prevent a shot after Staal got around a defenseman down low following a give-and-go with Ray Whitney.
The Sabres on Thursday announced defenseman Henrik Tallinder will be lost for the remainder of the postseason due to a broken left arm suffered in Game Three.
"You feel terrible for Henrik," Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff said. "He's played tremendously and he doesn't get to be part of the ride anymore. There is nothing to get down about besides that. We are more than capable of overcoming his loss."
"When we're playing our game and doing our thing, it's usually to try and take advantage of the opposition's defense from the top of the circles down," Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette said. "We'll continue to make that part of our game plan."
Buffalo is 5-for-17 on the power play in the series, while Carolina is just 3-of-14.
The series shifts back to the RBC Center for Game Five on Sunday.
