San Diego (20-16) at Chicago Cubs (15-20) 2:20 pm EDT
CHICAGO (Ticker) - After a great start to the season, Greg Maddux finds himself in unfamiliar territory.
The future Hall of Famer tries to avoid a third straight loss Saturday when the Chicago Cubs continue their three-game series with the San Diego Padres.
The 40-year-old Maddux (5-2, 3.64 ERA) won his first five starts of the season, allowing one run or fewer in each of those outings. However, the four-time Cy Young Award winner has dropped his last two starts, surrendering 12 runs in 8 2/3 innings over that stretch.
Maddux is 23-15 with a 3.15 ERA in 42 career starts against the Padres, including an 8-3 loss on Monday in which he allowed seven runs in 3 2/3 innings.
San Diego has won 12 of its last 13 games following a 10-5 victory in Friday's series opener. Mike Piazza collected four hits and Dave Roberts had three hits and scored three runs for the Padres, who took advantage of three Cubs errors in a five-run fifth.
The loss was the 10th in 11 games for Chicago, which will take aim at Chris Young (3-2, 3.61). The 6-10 righthander yielded three runs in 6 2/3 innings Monday against the Cubs, whom he was facing for the first time in his career.
