On Sunday, the man Earnhardt respected as his biggest rival will try to show the fans who hate him how it's done on NASCAR's biggest and most dangerous speedway.
Jeff Gordon starts on the pole and hopes to move ahead of Earnhardt on the career victory list. He also hopes to cheat disaster in another example of Russian Roulette at Talladega.
"The big crash isn't a matter of if, but when," Gordon said. "It's going to be really wild. This track now with the re-pave is so smooth and has so much grip. If you have a car that comfortable, it allows everybody to push the limits that much harder. It going to get out of control."
Sunday probably is the final time we'll see this iteration of a Cup car on the gigantic oval. Twenty years of restrictor-plate racing here will change after this event.
NASCAR will use the Car of Tomorrow in the fall race on the 2.66-mile speedway, and probably go to the COT full-time in 2008.
This race is the end of an era that has included some of the most terrifying crashes in NASCAR's history.
