WASHINGTON (Ticker) - Rookies Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby will square off for the fourth time this season when the Washington Capitals host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday in a matchup of last-place teams.
Ovechkin has stolen some of Crosby's thunder this season with a spectacular rookie campaign and carries a six-goal streak into Wednesday's action.
The 20-year-old right wing had two tallies and an assist in a 5-2 victory over the New York Islanders on Monday, just the Capitals' second triumph in their last eight games.
Ovechkin has seven goals and three assists during his surge and leads all first-year players in goals (41) and points (76).
Crosby has 29 tallies and leads all rookies with 39 assists. He had a goal and an assist in a 5-4 shootout loss to Tampa Bay on Tuesday, the Penguins' third in a row on their three-game homestand.
Crosby and defensemen Josef Melichar and rookie Ryan Whitney scored in the final 14:49 of regulation to force overtime. But Crosby was one of two Pittsburgh skaters to fail on a shootout attempt and Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury allowed two to get in.
The three prior meetings between the sensational rookies have sided with Crosby, who has scored three goals and handed out five assists in three wins for Pittsburgh. Ovechkin has a pair of scores and one assist in the three games, during which the Penguins have outscored the Capitals, 19-8.
