TORONTO (Ticker) - A pair of teams heading in opposite directions meet Tuesday when the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs host the surging Montreal Canadiens.
The Maple Leafs have lost five straight by a combined score of 23-11, a slide that has plummeted them to the Northeast Division basement.
The losing streak reached new depths with a 4-2 loss to Ottawa on Saturday, after which center Eric Lindros announced he will need surgery on his right wrist for an injury that already had robbed him of 26 games.
Toronto took an early 1-0 lead and pulled into a 2-2 tie on Alexei Ponikarovsky's tally midway through the second. However, the Senators wasted little time reclaiming the lead early in the third and added an empty-netter to seal another damaging loss for the Maple Leafs.
Entering Tuesday, Toronto is eight points behind Montreal for the last playoff spot. Gaining a pair of points may be tough as the Canadiens are 6-0-3 in their last nine games after Monday's 5-4 shootout loss to Philadelphia.
Montreal rallied from a late two-goal deficit on goals by Mike Ribeiro and Sheldon Souray and took an early one-goal lead in the shootout before dropping it in four rounds.
The Canadiens dealt the Maple Leafs an eighth straight loss January 26, claiming a 4-3 win in overtime. Saku Koivu's power-play tally 64 seconds into the extra session was the difference.
