ST. LOUIS (Ticker) - While their chances at keeping alive a league-high streak of 25 seasons with a playoff berth remain a remote possibility, the St. Louis Blues are beginning to make noise in the Western Conference.
The Blues return from a successful road trip to take on the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday in the opener of a four-game homestand.
Since trading away its two leading scorers, Doug Weight and Mike Sillinger, in late January, St. Louis is 7-2-1 and coming off a trek that spanned the Olympic break and brought the club rare success away from home.
The Blues, who entered the trip with just five road wins, went 4-1-1 on the trek and earned a four-game sweep of Vancouver with Sunday's 4-1 triumph.
Rookie Lee Stempniak had a goal and an assist and Curtis Sanford made 23 saves as St. Louis pulled within two points of Chicago and gave itself a chance to climb out of the last-place spot in the West, a position it has held much of the season.
Resigned to playing spoiler for the rest of the campaign, the Blues can do just that by adding to the Avalanche's recent struggles. Colorado has dropped the first two games of its four-game road trip and is just three points ahead of Edmonton, which holds down the last playoff spot in the West.
The Avalanche twice lost one-goal leads and allowed a shorthanded tally early in the third period that proved to be the decisive score in a 5-3 loss to Minnesota on Sunday.
Alex Tanguay assisted on all three scores for Colorado, which also is just three points behind Northwest Division-leading Calgary.
In the midst of their early season struggles, the Blues dropped a 6-1 decision to the Avalanche on January 9. Rookie Marek Svatos recorded his second hat trick for Colorado.
