San Jose (28-21-8) at Edmonton (30-21-8) 9:00 pm EST

EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) - The San Jose Sharks currently are staring up at the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference standings. The way things are going, however, that could be changing very soon.

The Sharks try to post their fifth straight victory and send the Oilers to their fifth consecutive loss Friday when the teams meet for the third time this season.

San Jose won its last three games prior to the Olympic break and kept a good thing going Tuesday with a 5-1 triumph over Detroit. Joe Thornton had a goal and three assists and Jonathan Cheechoo also netted one of the Sharks' franchise-record five power-play goals.

Vesa Toskala made 28 saves to earn his fourth straight win for San Jose, which has scored 16 goals over its last three contests.

Meanwhile, Edmonton has dropped four straight games - allowing 20 goals in that stretch - and leads Anaheim by three points for eighth place in the standings.

The Oilers' latest defeat came Wednesday, 4-2, against St. Louis despite goals from defensemen Chris Pronger and Marc-Andre Bergeron. Jussi Markkanen allowed three goals on 10 shots before Mike Morrison came on in the third period and allowed one goal on only two shots.

San Jose has lost both meetings with Edmonton this season - both in shootouts - and has just one win in its last nine encounters with the Oilers.
